Predicted Tottenham team for trip to Aston Villa: Conte given major left-back headache

Antonio Conte, Tottenham, April 2022.

Following a rout last time out, the predicted Tottenham team will see Antonio Conte make a choice between returning men Ryan Sessegnon and Sergio Reguilon.

Tottenham have been in fantastic form over the last few games. They have won each of their last three, and have scored 10 goals in those victories.

The first game of the current win streak saw Conte’s side win 2-0 away at Brighton. Spurs then went on to defeat high-flying West Ham 3-1.

Last game, Tottenham routed Newcastle United. They won comfortably, putting five goals past Eddie Howe’s side, and climbed up to fourth in the process.

Conte was forced to play Matt Doherty out of position, at left wing-back for that game. While the Irishman, and Emerson Royal – who filled the vacant right wing-back spot – both got on the scoresheet, Spurs will have the choice of two returning left-sided defenders for the Aston Villa game.

Conte mentioned in his pre-match press conference that Sessegnon and Reguilon had both trained in the week. As such, we could see one of those players return to the side for this game, allowing Doherty to play in a role more natural to him, given he has been preferred to Emerson recently.

Conte said it is “good” that Sessegnon and Reguilon are back, and admitted they “need to pay attention” to the former, as he has been out for a longer period, which could mean Reguilon is more likely to start.

Last time out – Tottenham 5-1 Newcastle

The Spurs team had a familiar look to it, but for the one change to the previous game.

Hugo Lloris started in net, with a back three of Cristian Romero, Eric Dier and Ben Davies ahead of him.

Emerson – the only change – played at right wing-back, with Doherty on the left. Usual midfield pair Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur played between them.

Dejan Kulusevski, Harry Kane and Heung-Min son made up the attack – Son was the only member of the trio to find the net.

Predicted Tottenham team against Aston Villa

The team is not likely to change all too much amid the winning run, but for one potential change.

Lloris is likely to remain in net, with a back three of Romero, Dier and Davies ahead of him.

Doherty could move back to the right-hand side. Reguilon could return on the left, as Conte’s comments suggest Sessegnon is not ready yet. Hojbjerg and Bentancur may partner each other in the midfield.

Kulusevski, Kane and Son are likely to make up the attack. Kane will be keen to get his name on the scoresheet, after blanking last game.

Predicted Tottenham XI: Lloris; Romero, Dier, Davies; Doherty, Hojbjerg, Bentancur, Reguilon; Kulusevski, Kane, Son
