Pundit claims Tottenham could be faced with unthinkable scenario over massive summer transfer

Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed Tottenham may have to do the unthinkable and sell Harry Kane to a Premier League rival, if he refuses to sign a new contract in north London.

A report from The Times recently stated that Spurs will refuse to sell their all-time greatest goalscorer this summer, despite the fact that he will only have a year remaining on his contract.

The England skipper is, however, said to be open to signing a new deal – despite genuine interest from Manchester United and German giants Bayern Munich.

Kane made it 267 goals in Tottenham colours to create history as he notched the winner against Manchester City.

That strike also made it 200 in the Premier League for Kane, who is now just 60 shy of Alan Shearer’s mark.

And speaking about the striker’s long-term future, Agbonhalor feels that Spurs may have to win the FA Cup this season to convince the 29-year-old that they are heading in the right direction.

He told Football Insider: “Harry Kane has got 18 months left. In the summer, he’ll either sign a new contract or leave.

“But Spurs might be in a position where Kane says he is only going to an English club – because he’ll want to break Shearer’s record.

“Tottenham might not have a choice in whether they sell him to a Man United.

“It’s a really difficult position for Spurs. As much as they say they won’t let him go to a rival, if he runs into the final year of his contract – they could lose a £70m striker for nothing.

“Spurs don’t like to lose money.

“It’s going to be horrible because without him they are nothing.

“The best thing they can do is win the FA Cup this season. That could convince him that Tottenham are on the right path.”

Conte future tied to new Kane contract

Tottenham’s hopes of keeping Kane also depends on who is in charge of the club next season.

At this stage, Conte’s contract is due to run out at the end the season and there is no indication whether he is willing to stay on in north London.

Indeed, reports on Wednesday claimed that a shock switch to AC Milan could be on the cards.

Tottenham are back in action on Saturday when they head to Leicester in the Premier League.
