Tottenham push to sign transformative La Liga duo as excellent Fabio Paratici transfer plan emerges

Tottenham director of football Fabio Paratici has a cunning plan to sign two Atletico Madrid players who could completely transform Antonio Conte’s fortunes in north London.
Tottenham have dealt with Atleti in the transfer market on a couple of occasions recently. In August they allowed left-back Sergio Reguilon to join the Spanish club on a season-long loan.
Atleti were in need of a new player in the position after Nottingham Forest signed Renan Lodi from them. Reguilon has only made five appearances under Diego Simeone so far this season after being out injured at the start of the season.
And now Reguilon will play alongside former Spurs team-mate Matt Doherty. Late on transfer deadline day, Spurs announced that Doherty’s contract had been terminated by mutual consent to allow the right-back to join Atleti.
The 31-year-old was originally going to move to the Spanish capital on loan for the remainder of the campaign. However, Spurs could not sanction this transfer as it would have taken them past the number of international loans allowed by FIFA.
As such, Spurs chiefs agreed to end Doherty’s contract to allow Atleti to capture him. According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Spurs view Atleti’s signings of Reguilon and Doherty as ‘favours’ owed towards them.
And in a potentially great move from Paratici, Spurs could call those favours in during the summer to land two experienced players.
The first Atleti man Spurs want to negotiate for is goalkeeper Jan Oblak. They are in need of Hugo Lloris’ replacement as the 36-year-old heads towards retirement.
Tottenham hope to sign Atletico Madrid pair
Oblak has been on Spurs’ radar for some time. He is viewed as one of the best keepers in the world, having kept an incredible 186 clean sheets in 381 matches for Atleti.
Oblak’s contract at the Wanda Metropolitano does not expire until summer 2028, so Atleti are under no pressure to sell later this year.
However, Paratici believes the ‘favours’ Atleti owe Spurs can be used to agree a deal.
Oblak could be followed to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium by winger Yannick Carrasco. Like Oblak, Spurs have looked into signing Carrasco in previous transfer windows, only to pursue different players.
But the Belgian could finally move to Spurs in the summer. He wants a ‘change of scenery’ and Spurs would be able to provide him with exactly that.
Carrasco’s situation is a bit more complicated than Oblak’s. That is because Barcelona have the option to sign him after allowing Memphis Depay to join Atleti in January.
Spurs to ‘cash in’ favours with Atleti
However, Spurs may ‘cash in’ on their favours with Atleti to get to Carrasco first.
The 29-year-old is similar to Ivan Perisic in that he can provide cover in a number of positions. While he prefers to operate as a left winger, he can also play as a left wing-back if required.
Therefore, Carrasco would be able to play in one of the two attacking positions behind Harry Kane, or he could go in the left wing-back position if Conte’s other options are out injured.
The capture of Oblak would certainly transform Conte’s time at Spurs. He would be a stunning replacement for Lloris as he is a commanding keeper who is much less prone to mistakes.
Oblak would also bring a winning attitude to the Spurs dressing room. He has helped Atleti to win trophies such as La Liga and the Europa League during his time with them.
Meanwhile, Spurs have been criticised for abandoning a ‘super player’ in the winter window.
