Tottenham to replace icon of recent era with Serie A star as insider confirms cut-price transfer possible

Alex Meret and Victor Osimhen of Napoli

A journalist has confirmed that Tottenham are interested in a Serie A player after his agent revealed Premier League teams to be chasing his signature this month.

Tottenham are yet to agree any January signings. However, they could bring in a Netherlands attacker as their first winter arrival.

Tottenham have stolen Arnaut Danjuma from Everton by agreeing a deal with Villarreal for him. He will join Antonio Conte’s side on loan until the end of the season once his medical is complete and all the necessary paperwork is signed.

Spurs are hoping to follow the Danjuma capture by bringing in Sporting Lisbon right-back Pedro Porro, too. According to Fabrizio Romano, they will hold another meeting with Sporting today (Wednesday) to try and reach an agreement.

Danjuma will compete with Son Heung-min, Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski for a place in attack just behind Harry Kane, while Porro should slot straight in at right wing-back ahead of Emerson Royal, Matt Doherty and Djed Spence. But Conte still needs a successor for Hugo Lloris in goal.

The Frenchman is now 36 years old. And after recently retiring from international duty, it does not seem like it will be long before he hangs up his gloves at club level.

Spurs are eyeing David Raya as a potential replacement. And he is refusing to pen a new contract at Brentford, giving Spurs hope they will be able to land him.

However, Raya is also being monitored by the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea. So Spurs must have alternative keepers in mind, just in case Raya joins a ‘Big Six’ rival.

Tottenham linked with Napoli ace

One option that emerged recently is Napoli’s Alex Meret. During an interview, his agent Federico Pastorello said: “He experienced some difficult months, he seemed close to leaving, but he reacted as a great man and a great champion.

“We are in talks with Napoli for his contract extension. His deal expires in June 2024, but there are some English clubs interested.”

Pastorello did not reveal if Spurs were among the interested sides. But journalist Ciro Venerato has now weighed in and confirmed Spurs are looking at Meret to replace Lloris.

He says Napoli are working hard to tie the 25-year-old down to fresh terms. Although, they are struggling to meet his demands and this is why other clubs are taking notice.

Napoli do have the option to extend Meret’s contract until summer 2025. This would give them an extra 12 months to acquire the funds for a more lucrative deal.

Conte can land Alex Meret for just over £26m

However, Venerato has suggested Napoli will sell their shot-stopper if Spurs submit a bid worth €30million (£26.4m).

The Serie A leaders would normally hold out for more money when it comes to Meret. But his contract situation means they will have to accept reduced offers, giving Spurs a great opportunity.

Lloris has been a loyal servant to Spurs since joining from French outfit Lyon in August 2012. He has made 442 appearances in all competitions and has captained them since 2015.

Now is the time though for Spurs to rely on someone new in net. And Meret could be a great option given his Serie A experience and time spent with the Italy national team.

Spurs fans will be hoping Meret can be a bit more reliable than Lloris. While the latter has been loyal to the club, he has been guilty of some bad mistakes during his time in north London.

Meanwhile, Man Utd have been told to ruin Spurs’ hopes of securing a deal for ‘the best player in the world’ in his position.
