Tottenham face major new rival in bid to land £15million-rated centre-back prospect

Josh Magennis, Ronnie Edwards Hull v Peterborough

Crystal Palace have reportedly joined Tottenham Hotspur in pursuit of highly-rated Peterborough United defender Ronnie Edwards.

The 19-year-old has made a big name for himself in the Championship this season, featuring 30 times for a Posh side battling to avoid relegation in the second tier of English football.

Grant McCann’s side currently sit 23rd in the Championship and are nine points from safety with four games to go. They also face a huge clash with relegation rivals Barnsley at Oakwell on Bank Holiday Monday.

But with relegation looking almost inevitable, it would appear that the likes of Edwards will be moved on.

A recent report revealed Tottenham’s interest in the centre-back and now the Daily Mail has credited Palace also being in the running for the youngster.

The report adds that Edwards is valued at around £15million, although Palace may just have the nod.

Eagles boss Patrick Vieira has made a big point of building a young, vibrant side at Selhurst Park. To that end, Edwards would certainly fit in more in south London.

Indeed, Tyrick Mitchell, Marc Guehi and Conor Gallagher have all thrived under the Frenchman.

Concerns for Edwards over Spurs move

As for Tottenham, Antonio Conte has refused to trust EFL signing Joe Rodon at Premier League level. The Wales international continually finds himself left on the bench or out of the matchday squad altogether.

That does not particularly bode well for Edwards, if he does head to north London.

The Sun adds that the Posh star is a complete defender who enjoys coming out with the ball. To that end, he is probably suited more to Conte’s three centre-back system rather than the 4-4-2 Vieira prefers playing.
