Tottenham transfer news: Barcelona make firm Sergio Reguilon signal, with Real Madrid input clear

Barcelona have made Tottenham left-back Sergio Reguilon a firm summer transfer target alongside Marcos Alonso, according to a report.

Reguilon moved to Spurs in the summer of 2020 from Real Madrid as a Jose Mourinho signing. The Spaniard is one of several full-back additions for the north London club in the past few years.

And while Reguilon has had his moments – just like Emerson Royal has and Serge Aurier did – his future remains unclear.

Indeed, current Tottenham boss Antonio Conte is seemingly still finding his best options for the wing-back positions in his 3-5-2 formation.

Reguilon featured heavily at the start of Conte’s reign but has since had to battle for minutes with Ryan Sessegnon and Matt Doherty.

Previous reports have hinted at Barcelona interest. According to the latest from the Daily Mirror, though, Reguilon is now a firm Barca target.

The La Liga club, like Conte’s side, have enjoyed something of a resurgence this season under Xavi. However, the task is far from complete and Xavi needs more investment this summer.

The head coach wants a top new left-back and is considering bringing former Real Madrid man Reguilon back to Spain.

Madrid have a buy-back clause in the deal they signed with Spurs for the left-back. However, that £27.5million option expires this summer and so Los Blancos must decide whether to run the risk of Reguilon strengthening their La Liga rivals.

Indeed, Barca have already qualified for next season’s Champions League after dropping down to the Europa League this term. Their next task is to get back fighting with Madrid for the Spanish title. They are also targeting Chelsea’s Alonso, who could similarly move back to Spain.

In any case, Conte is reportedly after a new wing-back signing. The Daily Mirror therefore adds that the 25-year-old could become ‘surplus to requirements’ at Tottenham.

Conte confirmed recently that Reguilon facing a fight to play again this season because of a groin injury.

Reguilon could miss final Tottenham chance

Conte has not fully decided on his favoured full-back pairing. Instead, he has played Reguilon, Doherty, Emerson and Sessegnon interchangeably.

Sessegnon played on the left against Liverpool last Saturday, with Emerson on the right.

And heading into the final few games of the season, Reguilon’s absence could prove costly for him Indeed, the final stretch of the campaign is when players can prove their worth to managers.

That is especially the case for Spurs, as they fight for a top-four Premier League finish and subsequent Champions League football next season.

Should he stay in London, though, Reguilon has a contract until 2025 and so will fancy his chances of getting back into the team.
