Tottenham star Son Heung-min named pundit’s ‘controversial’ Player of the Season as Salah difference named

Gabby Agbonlahor believes that Tottenham forward Son Heung-min should win the Premier League Player of the Season award for his goalscoring record.

Spurs’ season has proved a tale of two halves amid the change in manager. While Nuno Espirito Santo’s reign turned sour and he only lasted 17 games, Antonio Conte has inspired progress from the team.

And despite the inconsistencies throughout the campaign, South Korea international Son has maintained his top form.

In fact, four Premier League games is the longest he has gone this season without scoring. What’s more, none of his 20 strikes have come from the penalty spot, unlike 22-goal top scorer Mohamed Salah.

Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne is another candidate for the Player of the Season award. His four-goal haul against Wolves on Wednesday took City a huge step closer to title glory.

According to Agbonlahor, though, Son stands out as the star forward because of his lack of penalties.

“You know who I would probably give it to? I know it might be controversial, but Son,” the pundit told talkSPORT.

“He’s scored 18/19 Premier League goals [with] no penalties. He’s been on fire. Left foot, right foot, smashing them in.

“If I could vote for a player now for the Premier League Player of the Season, I’d pick Son.”

Son has further contributed to Tottenham in attack with seven Premier League assists this season.

In that regard, he is one behind Spurs team-mates Harry Kane and Dejan Kulusevski.

Son has also picked up six Man of the Match awards this term, further stamping his mark as one of Spurs’ key men.

He has continued his excellent partnership with Kane this season. Furthermore, Kulusevski has made it a deadly trio by slotting in seamlessly following his January arrival from Juventus.

Son could well finish as the Premier League’s top scorer.

After Thursday’s north London derby against Arsenal, Tottenham have two games left to play.

And with Salah out of form at Liverpool, overtaking the Egyptian must be in Son’s mind before the season comes to a close.

While Tottenham have had their off days this season, finishing as top scorer would prove a fantastic personal achievement for Son.

However, Salah will of course want to get back in the goals after a barren spell.
