Son Heung-min admits Tottenham issue ‘makes me just laugh’, with frustration starting to creep in

Son Heung-min has admitted that he is starting to “laugh” at his Tottenham goal drought but has backed himself to soon return with a flurry of strikes.

The Spurs winger finished last season with a share of the Premier League’s Golden Boot following 23 strikes. After matching Mohamed Salah pound-for-pound – and in fact scoring no penalties unlike Salah – his stock rose even further.

However, he has not been able to hit the ground running this term and carry on such form.

While he has assisted one Premier League goal this campaign, it is Harry Kane, Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison who have been among the goals in all competitions.

Son has admitted that he has no real concerns because he still feels fully involved in Tottenham attacks every game. But, he did admit that frustration is starting to set in.

“I’m OK. If I’m honest, if I wasn’t getting chances in the game I would be worried but I’m still getting chances,” the South Korean told Football.London.

“In some games, there have been unlucky moments. In some games, it has been a bad finish.

“This is going to make me stronger. This is something I can see will be an improvement because I still have a lot of space for improvement.

“As a team and as an individual as well. Most important is that we are doing well as a team. I’ll do everything the team needs.”

Nevertheless, Son backed himself to restore his confidence once one goal goes in.

He added: “In some games I’m really frustrated because if I have some massive chances and the ball doesn’t go in.

“It makes me just laugh. But I am not worried about it because the team and the staff and all the fans are helping me.

“I think if I score one the confidence will be back and I hope I can go on and score more goals.”

Son has started all six of Tottenham’s Premier League games so far. The north London side remain unbeaten after four wins and two draws, scoring 12 goals along the way.

One pundit recently claimed that Richarlison’s big-money arrival from Everton in the summer has impacted Son’s mindset.

The Brazilian scored his first two Tottenham goals in Wednesday’s Champions League win over Marseille. Before that, he had a Premier League goal ruled out.

Spurs star must remain focused

There is no doubt about it, the goals will go flying in for Son when he gets going.

He has proven time and time again that a patch of poor form will not define his Premier League career and it seems only a matter of time before he finally gets on the scoresheet.

The fact that Son has started all six league games this season shows that Conte has full faith in him finding the goals.

Conte likes to have a set structure in his team with crucial players throughout the team. Son’s continued presence means he will surely get more chances to find the net.

If anything, the added competition of Richarlison and Kulusevski to add to the long-term pairing of Kane and Son, will only help the latter push on to score.
