Tottenham have held talks over signing a £26m-rated Liverpool target, while Fabrizio Romano has confirmed a Bundesliga ace valued at £60m is also wanted.

Among the most pressing issues new Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou must address this summer is the club’s leaky defence. Spurs conceded an eye-watering 63 goals in the Premier League last season. That troubling mark was sixth-worst in the competition.

With Clement Lenglet returning to Barcelona and the Telegraph reporting Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez are on the chopping block, one and more probably two new centre-halves could soon be required.

All manner of names have been linked including Harry Maguire, Marc Guehi, Tosin Adarabioyo, Gleison Bremer and Edmond Tapsoba.

Now, according to Fabrizio Romano, it’s Tapsoba who features near the top of Spurs’ wishlist, while a new name has also entered the frame.

Indeed, the transfer guru tweeted Tottenham are sizing up Liverpool target Micky van de Ven. The Netherlands Under-21 international plies his trade for Wolfsburg and per German outlet WAZ, is valued around the €30m (approx. £26m) mark.

Van de Ven has repeatedly emerged as a contender to join Liverpool thanks in large part to the Jorg Schmadtke connection.

Schmadtke is Liverpool’s new sporting director having most recently worked for Wolfsburg. Schmadtke is understood to be hopeful of delivering Van de Ven to Liverpool and his role as a left-footed centre-half is something the Reds lack.

All four of Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez are right-footed. What’s more, Van Dijk and Matip are both the wrong side of 30 and Matip is out of contract in the summer of 2024.

A move for Van de Ven would therefore stabilise Liverpool at centre-half over the coming years. However, per Romano, it’s Tottenham who’ve opened talks.

The trusted journalist tweeted that not only is Van de Ven on Spurs’ shortlist, but talks over bringing him to north London have “already [taken] place”.

What’s more, if recent comments by Van de Ven are anything to go by, he’s willing to jump ship to the Premier League.

Van de Ven could cost around £26m to sign, while the going rate for Edmond Tapsoba when Arsenal made enquiries into his signing back in January of 2022 was £60m.

The Bayer Leverkusen ace has gone from strength to strength since then and a discount on that lofty figure looks highly unlikely.

If Postecoglou is serious about his defensive revamp and multiple new centre-backs are required, Tapsoba and Van de Ven are fast emerging as the likeliest contenders to sign up.
