Tottenham in contact to sell star Postecoglou doesn’t fancy as midfielder becomes top target for Spanish titans

Son Heung-min and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg stand over Tottenham free-kick
Atletico Madrid have become the latest contenders to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Tottenham Hotspur and are in contact for the midfielder, according to reports.
Hojbjerg has been a regular starter for Tottenham in each of his three seasons there since joining them from Southampton in 2020. However, a range of reports have recently indicated he faces an uncertain future at the club following the appointment of Ange Postecoglou as their new head coach.
If Postecoglou would prefer to use other players in Hojbjerg’s position, the 27-year-old may have to leave. With that in mind, it recently emerged that he is under consideration for a shock return to Bayern Munich.
But another suitor for Hojbjerg, according to Tuttomercatoweb, could be Atletico Madrid. The Spanish giants have supposedly made him their preferred target to strengthen in midfield.
Atleti’s Saul Niguez is one of the latest players to be heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, Geoffrey Kondogbia and Axel Witsel are about to enter the final 12 months of their contracts in the Spanish capital.
The same goes for Koke, although there is an expectation that the club captain will renew his deal. Nevertheless, midfield is area that Diego Simeone might have to reinforce.
Per TMW, contact is now underway for Atleti to take Hojbjerg from Tottenham. The report says critical days are awaiting, which suggests Hojbjerg’s move might happen sooner rather than later.
Hojbjerg could follow familiar Tottenham exit route
Spurs sent Sergio Reguilon to Atleti on loan last summer and then Matt Doherty there on a free transfer during the January transfer window. Now, they could be ready to allow Hojbjerg to head down the same transfer route.
Playing in La Liga would be a new experience for the Denmark international, who has only represented German and English clubs before.
By joining Los Colchoneros, he would be able to participate in next season’s Champions League. In contrast, Tottenham do not have any European football on offer next season after only finishing eighth in the Premier League.
Therefore, the move to Atleti should be appealing to Hojbjerg. However, reports from other sources have reminded he is not the only name on their shortlist.
For example, they are especially keen on Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat, who stood out for Morocco at the World Cup and has been linked with Spurs himself, funnily enough.
