Tottenham enigma finally decides to quit club as Postecoglou gets ruthless over too many defensive howlers

Davinson Sanchez, Ben Davies, Eric Dier, Tottenham, August 2022

A former club-record signing has reportedly decided that the time is right to quit Tottenham after struggling for game time in recent seasons.

Davinson Sanchez, who cost the club £42million when he arrived from Ajax in 2017, wants an opportunity elsewhere after making over 200 appearances for Spurs since moving to north London.

However, after a solid start at the club, when he played often played alongside the outstanding Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld in a bak three, Sanchez has really struggled to make his mark since.

He has slid further down the pecking order in the last two years, with the signing of Cristian Romero and Clement Lenglet’s loan switch pushing him down to the bench.

Indeed, the 27-year-old only turned out eight times in the Premier League last term and was always prone to making costly mistakes in games.

And now Colombian reporter Pipe Sierra has stated that Sanchez has decided not to continue at Tottenham, despite the appointment of Ange Postecoglou potentially offering him a fresh start.

The player’s agents are set to hold talks with Spurs to discuss an exit strategy, with the plan to sell him on while he has still has a year left on his contract.

While there has been some Premier League interest in the defender, the report adds that he favours a move to another country instead.

Postecoglou looks to revamp shaky Tottenham defence

The Daily Mail recently stated that Sanchez would be one of up to seven Spurs exits this summer as Postecoglou looks to revamp his side, particularly in defence where they really struggled last season.

Indeed, talkSPORT pundit Gabby Agbonlahor named Sanchez in his team of Premier League flops for the 2022-23 season, stating: “Every game I’ve watched him, he’s had a mistake.

“I’ve been in here with [fellow pundit] Jamie O’Hara and he’s nearly crying, real tears, of how bad Sanchez has been. Mistake dot com.”

Sanchez’s proposed exit, coupled with Lenglet’s return to Barcelona, will see Postecoglou move for at least one new central defender this summer.

And, according to Friday’s edition of Transfer Gossip, England star Marc Geuhi is very much on his radar – but only if Tottenham are willing to pay Crystal Palace’s £60m asking price.
