Tottenham icon’s exit to Euro giant accelerates, with Man Utd the big winner as three transfers loom
Talks between a senior Tottenham and Inter Milan have ramped up, with the Spurs icon reportedly in line to replace a world class player who’s heading to Man Utd, per reports.
Hugo Lloris has been a constant between the sticks with Spurs over the last 11 years. The veteran Frenchman, 36, was among the world’s leading goalkeepers during the bulk of his club career in north London.
However, Lloris’ performance levels have dipped over the last couple of years and the stopper has decided it’s time for a change.
Indeed, despite having one year remaining on his contract, Lloris publicly declared he’ll seek a fresh challenge this summer.
The keeper told the French media at the beginning of June: “We have reached an important moment, whether it be for the club or me.
“It’s the end of an era. I have a desire for something else. I will carefully study what is possible.”
Spurs have since signed Lloris’ replacement in the form of Guglielmo Vicario. As such, and with the Evening Standard listing Lloris as one of three senior stars who’ll lead a clear-out, all eyes are on who he’ll sign for.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Serie A giant Inter are on the hunt for two new goalkeepers. Samir Handanovic has departed as a free agent, while starting stopper Andre Onana is edging closer to joining Man Utd.
Erik ten Hag will be landing one of the world’s elite if securing a reunion with Onana. The pair previously worked together at Ajax between 2017-22.
With two new goalkeepers required, Romano claimed Inter are sizing up Yann Sommer (Bayern Munich) and Anatolij Trubin (Shakhtar Donetsk).
However, according to FootMercato, Inter are also exploring a deal for Lloris that is quickly taking shape.
Lloris swoop accelerates, but three into two don’t go
Indeed, the French publication stated Inter have ‘intensified’ their talks with Lloris who ‘wants to leave Tottenham’.
Discussions on personal terms have ‘accelerated in recent hours’ given Inter now ‘know that Onana is going to join Manchester United.’
The fact Lloris won’t cost a big sum given he’s 36 appeals to Inter. The prospect of getting one final chance to prove the doubters wrong at a European giant – who also have Champions League football – will reportedly appeal to Lloris too.
Of course, three into two don’t go and it stands to reason Lloris, Sommer and Trubin won’t all be signed.
Given Trubin is 21 and at the beginning of his career, he could be viewed as a long-term project who’ll develop while serving as back-up to a veteran.
Sommer is 34 and Lloris is 36, with logic thus indicating Inter will go for one of that pair plus Trubin.
