Tottenham leading the chase as Fabio Paratici turns focus back to transfer favourite and new Kane partner

Roma attackers Tammy Abraham and Nicolo Zaniolo

Tottenham are once again being tipped to make a January move for a Serie A forward that sporting director Fabio Paratici is a huge fan of.

Spurs are expected to be active in the January transfer window, as they look to add more quality to Antonio Conte’s squad to help bolster the club’s top-four hopes and their ambitions of getting past AC Milan in the Champions League last 16.

One such target, who has been on Paratici’s radar for some time, is Roma attacker Nicolo Zaniolo.

The forward’s current deal in Rome expires in the summer of 2024. And there remains concern in the Italian capital that Zaniolo could look to run his contract down.

Tottenham are known to have made an offer to Roma previously. However, that was knocked back as the Serie A giants wanted money up front and not at a later date, as proposed by Daniel Levy.

Spurs took that approach as concerns have been raised about previous knee issues for Zaniolo.

And while the north London club still have those worries, the interest refuses to go away.

Roma concerned over Zaniolo contract

Indeed, TuttoMercatoWeb suggests that Roma are ‘far from being protected’ by the player’s contract, or the length of it remaining to be exact.

TMW adds that ‘Tottenham first of all’ remain interested in striking a deal for a player that Conte and Paratici know well from their time in Italy.

Juventus’ interest has also sparked Spurs into action again, with ‘hot scenarios opening up’ in ‘the months to come’.

Paratici is said to view Zaniolo as someone who would play off Tottenham talisman Harry Kane really well.

However, where that leaves the likes of Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison remains to be seen – unless Conte decides to change formation.

Kane prefers to have runners either side of him in a front three, with Conte rarely opting for a two.

Zaniolo has two goals and three assists in 14 appearances in all competitions this season.

Roma are currently seventh in the Serie A table. However, they could opt to cash in on Zaniolo to give Joe Mourinho funds to strengthen other areas of their team.

Tottenham better served to strengthen other areas

Despite Zaniolo being a quality performer, his injury issues are a cause for concern. Also, adding another striker is not exactly a major need for Tottenham right now.

They already have Richarlison as a central option if Kane is out for any length of time. Son, meanwhile, has also filled that role in the past.

Conte is more in need of someone to provide bullets from a deeper-lying role for his frontmen.

James Maddison and Ruslan Malinovskyi remain the top options to fill that particular role.

A new centre-back is also on the agenda, with Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni continually linked as a statement signing.

Tottenham are not back in action until Boxing Day when they head to London rivals Brentford.
