Tottenham, Newcastle learn fate after Memphis Depay reaches decision with ‘verbal agreement’ forged

Barcelona forward Memphis Depay

The transfer hopes of Tottenham and Newcastle United are all but over after a Memphis Depay move to Juventus was termed at an ‘advanced stage’.

Links to a move away from Barcelona for Depay have persisted throughout the summer. Despite him having top scored for the side last season, it seems Xavi is willing to let him go.

That is mainly due to reasons concerning the club’s wage bill. Barcelona have had problems registering players, and need to cut down on their wages in order to rectify that problem.

If that does not happen, £45million signing Jules Kounde may be able to walk away for free, without having officially played for the club.

Clearly, Barcelona do not want that to happen. As such, it seems Depay will be one of the players sacrificed in order to keep wages down.

There have been links over a return to the Premier League for the Dutchman. Tottenham and Newcastle United have been two of the most heavily-linked sides.

However, the pair may have to wait to see if either can pull off the transfer.

Indeed, The Sun reports that Depay is holding out for a move to Serie A giants Juventus.

The report states that the forward has met with the club’s board, and negotiations are at an advanced stage.

Furthermore, he apparently has a verbal agreement in place to sign with them.

Missing out on Depay no problem for Tottenham

Should Depay opt to sign with Juventus, Tottenham should not see that as a massive loss. They already have Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son and Richarlison to choose from to lead the attack.

What’s more, they have looked in good shape up top at the start of the season. Indeed, Spurs have scored seven goals in the first three games of the season, and are currently in fourth place.

As such, it does not seem like they need to add Depay into the mix.

For Newcastle, they may be more disappointed in not managing to land the star. The signing of a player like Depay – who netted  12 goals in 28 La Liga appearances last season – would be a big statement.

He would surely become one of the stars of the side, and be able to create some big moments. With that being said, they themselves have started the season fairly well, having won one game and drawn two, so are coping without a huge name up top.
