Tottenham have been tipped to make a January bid for a Serie A star who Man Utd tried and failed to include in an intriguing swap deal back in 2021, per a report.
Despite residing inside the top four and qualifying for the knockout rounds of the Champions League, Spurs’ season has rarely been smooth sailing.
Antonio Conte’s side continue to make life difficult by regularly falling behind. They have shown they’re more than capable of roaring back as the match wears on, but it’s a trait they’d rather not showcase each and every week.
Tottenham operate either with a 3-5-2 or a 3-4-3 formation under Conte. That allows him to feature at least two or even three of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma in the same eleven.
The trio are all defensive-minded and their selections have contributed to a one-paced feel in Tottenham’s attacks.
Spurs legend Glenn Hoddle is among those calling for a more creative addition to the midfield ranks. Leicester’s James Maddison has been linked, though won’t come cheap with a £60m valuation and won’t be moving until at least the end of the season anyway.
However, a box-to-box midfielder continues to draw links with Spurs and per Calciomercato, a January offer is looming.
They report Tottenham remain transfixed on Juventus’ Weston McKennie who was recently valued between €25m- €30m (£21.5m-£26m).
CBS Sports’ Ben Jacobs has claimed there’s ‘real substance’ to Tottenham’s interest and the latest from Calcio explains why Juve could cash in.
McKennie to swap Turin for Tottenham?
McKennie will return to Turin after starring for the USA in Qatar. The 24-year-old – who has also been linked with Leeds Utd – started four times out of four for the American side at the World Cup.
However, starts have been hard to come by in Italy and his situation is unlikely to improve after Christmas.
Paul Pogba will return from injury and is likely to walk straight into the starting eleven. Aside from Pogba, McKennie counts France starter Adrien Rabiot, Manuel Locatelli and rising youngsters Nicolo Fagioli and Fabio Miretti among his direct competition.
Juventus are therefore believed to be open to cashing in on McKennie who would add more of a goals threat to Conte’s midfield.
McKennie has three goals in limited minutes to his name at club level this season, and has scored nine goals in 41 matches for the USA.
Calcio state Tottenham have been testing the transfer waters and suggest their interest could result in an official bid being tabled next month.
Failed Man Utd swap deal revealed
A McKennie move to the Premier League has long been touted and the report also details how and when he could’ve ended up at Old Trafford.
They claim Man Utd offered Juventus a swap deal in 2021 that would’ve seen McKennie and Donny van de Beek switch places. Juve knocked back the proposal and Van de Beek’s career has continued to nosedive at a rapid rate since then.
Juventus are currently in turmoil amid a spate of high profile resignations and that may effect their January plans.
The club’s entire board of directors, president Andrea Agnelli and vice president Pavel Nedved, have all resigned following preliminary investigation by the Turin Public Prosecutor’s Office into fraudulent accounting and alleged hidden payments to players.
That could stifle the club’s business in the January window with so much upheaval behind the scenes, though Calcio conclude a deal is still possible. That rings especially true as Spurs chief Fabio Paratici knows his Juventus counterparts and the Italian league well.
