Chelsea have offered a struggling star to Tottenham who are seeking a new addition in his position, though Spurs reportedly have other targets in mind, including two on Man Utd’s radar.
Tottenham have backed Antonio Conte in the market since his arrival and that is a trend that’s expected to continue for as long as the Italian is at the helm.
The additions of Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison have given Spurs’ forward line fresh impetus.
Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma are the epitome of Conte midfielders, while the Spurs boss was allowed to forge a reunion with veteran wing-back Ivan Perisic despite the Croatian having no re-sale value.
Centre-back is one position that’ll come under the microscope in 2023, specifically the left side. Clement Lenglet arrived on loan but is only a short-term fix.
However, today’s update regards the goalkeeping position, with 90min reporting Tottenham are ‘continuing to evaluate’ long-term successors to Hugo Lloris.
The Frenchman remains unchallenged as the club’s number one between the sticks, though now aged 35, the clock is ticking.
Errors have crept into Lloris’ game in recent seasons and with a contract due to expire in 2024, Spurs are likely to make a decision next year.
Indeed, our own transfer insider, Graeme Bailey, reported earlier in November the current campaign will be Lloris’ last in north London.
Tottenham offered Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy?
90min run the rule over who could succeed Lloris, remarkably noting Tottenham have been offered Chelsea struggler, Edouard Mendy.
The Senegalese, 30, made an instant impact upon joining from Rennes in 2020. The £22m fee looked a bargain after Mendy produced a series of stunning displays and anchored the Blues’ march to Champions League glory in his debut season.
However, his form has dropped off since then, with Graham Potter even preferring Kepa Arizzalabaga in the run up to the World Cup prior to the Spaniard’s untimely injury.
That led to the Daily Mail reporting Kepa could be installed as Potter’s first choice after the World Cup.
The outlet also claimed Mendy fears for his long-term future at Chelsea and talks between the club and player’s camp over a contract extension hit a dead end.
Mendy retained his starting place for Senegal at the World Cup, though was at fault for both Netherlands goals in the 2-0 defeat on Monday.
90min report he’s been offered to Spurs, though Conte’s side seemingly have no interest.
Spurs eyeing Man Utd targets
That’s because the same report lists three other EPL stoppers who Tottenham are ‘actively keeping tabs on’.
They are Brighton’s Robert Sanchez, Everton’s Jordan Pickford and David Raya of Brentford.
Tottenham have also scouted FC Porto’s Diogo Costa who is wanted by Manchester United.
Aside from Costa, the Red Devils also like Brighton’s Sanchez whose selection to Luis Enrique’s Spain squad deprived David de Gea of a place in Qatar. Ironically enough, Chelsea are also believed to be keeping tabs on Sanchez, potentially to replace Mendy.
Tottenham are stated to be fully aware buying from within the Premier League will come at a premium.
However, given the club’s first choice goalkeeper for potentially the next decade is up for grabs, strong investment would certainly be warranted.
