Tottenham playing catch up over forward target as Serie A giants bossing race for potential Harry Kane successor

Lucas Beltran River Plate 2023 TEAMtalk1

Tottenham are said to be on the trail of River Plate striker Lucas Beltran but face a battle with the likes of AC Milan for his signature.

Following a tumultuous campaign, it is likely to be a summer of change at Spurs. A new manager will arrive, with Dutchman Arne Slot the current favourite to fill the vacancy. Ryan Mason has been in the dugout following the dismissal of both Antonio Conte and Cristian Stellini this season.

But the man who has led Feyenoord to the Eredivisie title in 2022-2023 could well be the next coach at the helm.

He will have a number of issues to deal with. The new manager will inherit a group of players devoid of confidence and direction, who have stuttered to eighth in the table.

They are way off the Champions League spots, having been in the top four at the start of April.

And there will be the huge issue of Kane’s future hanging over the club.

The England skipper tried to force an exit from the Tottenham Hotspur stadium a few years ago.

Daniel Levy refused to play ball and he remained to lead the Spurs line.

However, due to turn 30 in July, the time might now be right for the prolific marksman to move on.

He has bagged 28 Premier League goals this term, a number only bettered by the incredible Erling Haaland.

Should the man with 55 England goals move on, then Levy will need to act fast to recruit a new hitman.

European heavyweights circling for Beltran

Spurs clearly want Kane to remain at the club and it is by no means certain that he will depart.

But planning for the future is key to the success of a club and, with that in mind, a move for Beltran makes sense.

The Argentinian has started to make a name for himself at Estadio Mas Monumental.

The 22-year-old made 21 league appearances last season, scoring four goals. And he had notched five from 16 outing this term.

The youngster had 14 goals and five assists from 63 games in all competitions, with several clubs though to be keen.

TNT Sports are suggesting that the ‘great level’ he has reached in South America means he is in demand.

Atletico Madrid, Napoli and Milan are all said to hold an interest in a summer transfer.

But it is the San Siro giants who are thought to be leading the race. That is because Rossoneri officials have already met with River Plate president Jorge Brito.

However, there are no reports of any official bids having been made, leaving the way open for Tottenham to make a move.

Details on his price tag are sketchy. But it is suggested that the €6m Transfermarkt value him at is way wide of the mark.

But it seems as though the club that does land him will not have to dig too deep to get their man.
