Tottenham shellshocked as Harry Kane exit explodes into life with first official offer received from Bayern Munich

Tottenham Hotspur have received the first bid this summer for Harry Kane, with Bayern Munich sending their offer of a surprising value in writing, it has been revealed.

Kane is about to enter the final year of his contract at Tottenham, where he is the all-time leading goalscorer. After they failed to qualify for any European competition for next season, the striker has shown no sign of wanting to extend his stay.

Links with Man Utd have persisted, though Tottenham would be reluctant to give Kane up to a Premier League rival. Subsequently, the Red Devils appear to have admitted defeat already.

Elsewhere, Bayern Munich have been frequently linked with the England captain as well. However, there have been question marks about whether he would want to leave the Premier League while pursuing the competition’s scoring record.

Nevertheless, an update from Sky Sports Germany earlier on Tuesday indicated that a move to Bayern would actually be Kane’s preference this summer.

Consequently, Florian Plettenberg confirmed Bayern were ready to put some money on the table for Kane. And they have quickly lived up to that word.

The Athletic‘s David Ornstein has now revealed that Bayern have lodged a written ‘formal offer’ to sign Kane.

Their bid is worth €70m plus add-ons of an unspecified amount. The base fee would equate to around £60m, which seems low for a player of Kane’s pedigree, but takes into account his age (he will be 30 by the start of the new season) and contract status.

It was not immediately clear from Ornstein’s breaking news if Tottenham would accept or reject the bid. But Plettenberg – who earlier said Bayern are hoping to secure Kane for a package under €100m – has followed it up by confirming Spurs have said no.

Yet the wheels are in motion and Bayern have made their intentions clear, while Kane is also said to have clarified internally that he wants the move.

Bayern make first move for Harry Kane

The original report reminds that Erik ten Hag and Carlo Ancelotti – the managers of Man Utd and Real Madrid respectively – both remain admirers of Kane.

But Bayern have made the first concrete move for England’s all-time leading international goalscorer. Their interest has been driven by former Chelsea manager, Thomas Tuchel.

By joining Bayern, Kane would be able to participate in next season’s Champions League. His medal cabinet is still empty of any team honours, but that would be expected to change with the Bundesliga powerhouses. Indeed, Bayern have won 11 German league titles in a row.

There is a space in their attack that still needs filling after they sold Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona last summer. Kane would be one of the most high-profile options they could sign to address that void.
