Tottenham tapping up Newcastle star as it’s ‘fact’ they’ve been in his ear over summer transfer

Allan Saint-Maximin, Miguel Almiron, Newcastle United, May 2022

One journalist says it’s a “fact” that Tottenham have been in the ear of Allan Saint-Maximin as they look to prise him away from Newcastle United this summer.

Tottenham’s attacking options are growing window after window under Antonio Conte. Indeed, at the first opportunity, he signed Dejan Kulusevski.

When available, the former Juventus man has been one of Spurs’ most crucial assets.

In the summer, Conte spent big on Richarlison and while his impact has been limited, there are signs he’ll come good. In the last transfer window, Spurs flexed their muscles to sign Arnaut Danjuma on loan.

Indeed, it was reported Everton had struck a deal for the winger. However, Spurs swooped in and hijacked the move after he’d agreed to join the Toffees.

With a lot of reliance on Harry Kane and Heung-min Son, it’s not difficult to see why Conte is keen on adding more attacking threat.

In fact, that’s all the more true since Son has gone cold this season. He won the Premier League’s golden boot last season with 23 goals, but so far this campaign he’s managed just four in the league.

As such, links to attackers have continued beyond the January transfer window.

Spurs in Saint-Maximin’s ear

Tottenham are looking to prise an attacking talent straight from a direct rival, as per reports. Indeed, one journalist has revealed Newcastle’s Saint-Maximin is in their thoughts for the summer.

In fact, they’ve reportedly already been in his ear over the move.

“Now I know for certain that a lot of clubs have got into him, I know for certain, for example, that Spurs have had his ear during this transfer window,” the journalist said on The Everything is Black and White Podcast.

“Not necessarily for the transfer to happen in the window just closed because it would have been difficult to move him, but in the summer and I know for a fact Spurs have been in his ear.”

Saint-Maximin a smart snare from Tottenham

If Tottenham were to sign the attacker, it would be a smart piece of business. The Frenchman has never offered the greatest output in front of goal, but he creates danger and puts defenders on the back foot.

A player that can do that would surely open up spaces for the deadly attackers around him to float into, which could boost Kane’s threat, specifically.

What’s more, Conte would be weakening a direct rival. Indeed, Newcastle are in third place in the Premier League, three points above Tottenham in fifth.

It remains to be seen how much of a role Saint-Maximin will have following the addition of Anthony Gordon to the side. However, the Frenchman has been an important member of the Magpies’ team over the past few seasons – last term especially.

Even while having spent eight games on the sideline through injury this term, he’s featured in 12 league games. During those games, he’s scored once and assisted three times.
