Tottenham target consecutive title winner as next number one after Lloris approval affects four-man goalkeeper shortlist
Tottenham Hotspur have four options in mind to replace Hugo Lloris next season, according to a report – but one of them could be in the lead thanks to the captain’s own approval.
Lloris has been Tottenham’s main goalkeeper for more than a decade now. However, he is unlikely to be their regular starter next season, despite still being under contract until its conclusion. Indeed, at the age of 36, Lloris may soon find himself phased out.
Although there have been some concerns about his form in recent months, prior to the injury he is currently dealing with, Lloris is still someone with a good enough reputation that it will in theory be difficult to replace.
But Tottenham have been doing their preparation ahead of welcoming a new number one during the summer.
According to a report from Football London, Tottenham have four options in mind to replace Lloris. Under consideration are Brentford’s David Raya, Brighton’s Robert Sanchez, Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili and AC Milan’s Mike Maignan.
And the report notes that Lloris has already suggested that Maignan can succeed him for the French national team, which means his opinion of him taking over at Tottenham would likely be positive too.
Maignan joined Milan from Lille in 2021 after winning the Ligue 1 title, immediately backing it up with the identical honour in Serie A.
At the age of 27, he has earned a good reputation after being watched intently by Tottenham in recent years. In turn, Spurs could give him his first taste of Premier League football if they can prise him out of a contract lasting until 2026.
Maignan one of four options for Tottenham
Mamardashvili, meanwhile, is another player yet to represent an English club who could end up with that opportunity. Valencia are struggling on and off the pitch, so could have to sell the Georgian this summer.
Alternatively, they could go for someone with existing Premier League experience by opting for either Raya or Sanchez. The former could be particularly appealing because of his contract situation; with less than 18 months remaining on his deal at Brentford, Thomas Frank is bracing himself for the Spaniard’s exit this summer.
Sanchez, on the other hand, is a couple of years younger than his compatriot. The Brighton man is represented by the same agent as Tottenham defender Ben Davies, as well as the loaned-out Joe Rodon.
Hence, Tottenham have four options to give serious consideration to before the summer transfer window. Any of them could be ready to inherit Lloris’ role as number one, even if the captain remains as a backup.
Maignan might be the most established option thanks to his experience at a high level. And if Lloris thinks he might be a worthy option, he could also play a part in helping any potential transition to life as a Tottenham player.
But it doesn’t seem that anything is majorly advanced with any of these targets yet. For now, Tottenham are doing their research. By the time the summer comes around, it will be time for action.
