A Tottenham ace has responded after his agent left fans stunned by incredibly talking up a Real Madrid move.
Tottenham could be set for a painful summer transfer window if they fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League. And that is looking more likely than ever following the appalling 6-1 thrashing at the hands of Newcastle on Sunday.
It is not just the result which was damning, but also the performance. Tottenham’s players appeared lost and looked as if they simply did not care about how the season ends.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy remains hopeful of keeping star man Harry Kane but that will become increasingly hard if they end the campaign in dire fashion. Other big-name players such as Son Heung-min and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg could also be the subject of bids this summer, with the club seemingly only heading in one direction – downwards.
Surprisingly, Emerson Royal has been tipped to swap Spurs for reigning Champions League winners Real Madrid. On Monday, the right-back’s father and agent, Emerson Zulu, said: “There is a great possibility that Emerson will leave Tottenham.
“We believe it’s time for him to take a bigger leap and to go to a team that fights for titles. I think he fits a giant like Real Madrid.”
Both Spurs and Real supporters will have been left puzzled by these comments. Emerson has been one of Spurs’ worst performers since joining the club from Barcelona in August 2021. Due to this, he would struggle massively when playing at the absolute top level with a club the size of Real.
But it now looks like Emerson’s father was speaking out of turn. Reacting to the Real rumours, the player said (via the Evening Standard): “Although he is entitled to his own opinion, I have never spoken to him about it and I have always made it clear that I am happy at Tottenham.
Spurs man reacts to Real Madrid links
“As a professional athlete, I am proud to represent the team that believed in me and gave me the opportunity to showcase my skills.”
Admittedly, Real could probably do with signing a new right-back either this summer or next. Usual starter Dani Carvajal is now 31 years old, which means a long-term successor needs to be found.
But Emerson’s unreliable form with Spurs will certainly not have made him a target for Carlo Ancelotti’s side. Instead, it is far more likely that Real will pursue highly rated Real Valladolid defender Ivan Fresneda. However, they will have to fend off Arsenal to sign the 18-year-old.
While Emerson’s agent is also his father, an argument could be brewing between the pair after what was said. The 24-year-old will not be happy about the Real comments as it will worsen his relationship with the Spurs faithful.
