Conte reunion for Inter star on as ‘fear’ pushes Tottenham big step closer towards cut-price £16.9m deal

Tottenham are reportedly emerging as the leading candidates to sign Stefan De Vrij this summer, amid claims Inter Milan will allow him to leave for a cut-price fee.

Antonio Conte’s Tottenham revolution is slowly beginning to take shape. After what was looking a frustrating January, Fabio Paratici finally delivered two signings late in the transfer window. And both those players – Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur – have already started having an impact in the Spurs side.

Tottenham fans will hope, however, that the best is still to come. Paratici and Conte have ambitions to turn Spurs back into the title challengers they were under Mauricio Pochettino. And in typical Conte fashion, he plans to do so by building from the back.

As such, strengthening his defence will be the main focus for the Tottenham management team this summer.

One name who has been regularly linked with Tottenham, even prior to Conte’s arrival, is De Vrij.

The experienced Dutch defender is seen as one of Serie A’s best stoppers. Indeed, he was a key part of the Nerazzurri side in winning the title under Conte in 2021.

However, with a little over 15 months left on his deal, the defender is approaching a career crossroads.

Defender likely to be sold this summer

And having joined Inter as a free agent from Lazio in 2018, Tuttomercatoweb reports there is a growing ‘fear’ at the San Siro that De Vrij will do the same once again.

In order to negate that issue, Inter are reportedly circulating De Vrij’s name this summer to potential suitors.

Newcastle are one such team being linked, with Eddie Howe’s side in search themselves of more defensive stability.

However, Tottenham are also being linked and TMW reports that the chase is being led by Conte.

Indeed, Inter are seemingly willing to let the 30-year-old depart for a knockdown fee. As per the report, they are setting a price of just £16.9m (€20m) on the 55-times capped centre-half’s head.

That would be a fee well within Tottenham’s reach and a signing that would tick plenty of boxes as far as Spurs are concerned.

Inter line up De Vrij replacement

Amid a belief that De Vrij will depart this summer, TMW also reports that Inter coach Simone Inzaghi has already set his sights on his replacement.

And they they believe that Torino’s Gleison Bremer will arrive at the San Siro as his successor.

The Brazilian defender is likely to leave the Turin side this summer, having had a huge impact. Indeed, his side have shipped just 30 goals in 29 Serie A matches this season, the fifth best in Italy’s top flight over 2021/22.

Valued at around the £25m mark, Gleison Bremer is likely to land a big move himself this summer.

To that end, reports last week stated that Inter are positioning themselves at the front of the queue.

Bremer is also reportedly on Tottenham’s radar, with club scouts apparently making several checks.

However, there is a growing belief a move to the San Siro is on the cards. And that deal, in turn, will present Spurs with a strong chance of landing De Vrij.
