Tottenham contact for star admired by Antonio Conte the ‘most convincing’ to date

Victor Osimhen Stefan De Vrij TEAMtalk

Tottenham Hotspur are looking like favourites to sign Inter Milan centre-back Stefan de Vrij, claims a report.

The 29-year-old’s contract will enter it’s last 12 months this summer and there have been no sign of a new deal in Milan. The Holland centre-back has played the whole of his career in Holland and Italy, but his future looks uncertain.

Sport Witness, who cited reports in Italy, claimed that contract talks were at a “standstill” last month. And the latest news from Italy suggests that is still the case.

FcInterNews, via Sport Witness, report that Der Vrij’s renewal has been on “standby for some time” and is “certainly not among the first on the agenda” of Inter officials.

They stipulate there was a basic agreement in place between the two parties for a contract until 2025. That was believed to be worth around €4.5m per year. However, talks have been shelved due to the poor financial state of the club.

With that being the case then De Vrij’s agent Mino Raiola has been drumming up interest in the defender. And that is where Spurs come in, because the “most convincing” so far has come from London and “precisely from Tottenham”.

Der Vrij worked with Conte together last term as Inter ended their 11-year wait for a Serie A crown. And De Vrij made 32 appearances on the way to the Scudetto win. The pair are believed to enjoy a good relationship.

De Vrij praise for Conte

In December, De Vrij told DAZN: “Simone Inzaghi and Conte are two important coaches because they’ve won.

“I had already worked with Inzaghi at Lazio, Conte has had a great career because he’s always won.

“We won the title under Conte and you can see it now. Inzaghi has been working on a solid base and is doing an important season now.”

Inter are understood to be looking at Torino defender Gleison Bremer. And, per the report, they would be willing to let De Vrij go for around €30m and invest the money in Bremer.

Spurs will have rivals for the 55-cap international because Barcelona are also interested in the player.
