Tottenham have been told that they need to sign at least four new starters if they are to even try and compete with the best teams in the Premier League.
Spurs looked like they were going to enjoy one of their best results of the season when they led 2-0 at Manchester City at half-time, thanks to goals from Dejan Kulusevski and Emerson Royal.
However, the Premier League champions stormed back in the second half and eventually won 4-2 to leave Antonio Conte’s men fifth in table and five points off the Champions League places.
While Conte did an outstanding of getting the club into the top four last season, Jamie Carragher believes Tottenham have no chance this time around due to their leaky defence.
The Liverpool legend insists they need to replace the error-prone Hugo Lloris. He also believes they need two new centre-backs and a new right wing-back.
Spurs have certainly been linked with a number of players in those positions. However, Daniel Levy is still to make a single signing this month, while their top-four rivals are also being active in the market.
Brentford stopper David Raya and Everton’s Jordan Pickford are the main names being tipped to replace Lloris. Meanwhile, Conte remains keen on Inter Milan centre-backs Milan Skriniar and Alessandro Bastoni and Lepizig’s outstanding Josko Gvardiol.
But perhaps the most likely position that will be upgraded this month is right wong-back, with Sporting’s Pedro Porro looking like he could move to north London.
Conte faces failure without signings
And Carragher is certain that Conte has to make defensive signings or settle for no Champions League football.
He told Sky Sports after the second-half City mauling: “He [Conte] can never rely on his back three, or back five or goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet. I always feel like they’re going to concede a goal.
“He’s not going to change his tactics, this is what he does, he relies on a good strong base and having great attacking players on the counter-attack.
“He’s got those great attacking players, but his goalkeeper and defenders are nowhere near good enough for a Conte team to be successful, and that’s where they’ve got major problems.
“The goalkeeper at Tottenham right now, he’s been a good goalkeeper. But he has become a liability, they need a new goalkeeper for next season.
“Antonio Conte is talking about taking them further, getting top four or challenging for big honours.
“They need a new goalkeeper, need two centre-backs and a right wing-back. And that’s not to come into the squad, that’s to play.”
Tottenham are back in action on Monday evening when they head to high-flying Fulham.
