Tottenham among frontrunners for tempting transfer in overlooked area

Tottenham Hotspur have been given a good chance to sign a World Cup winning midfielder from Bayern Munich, according to reports.

Fabio Paratici wasted no time in the summer in beginning Tottenham’s rebuild in the transfer market. The new managing director, who arrived from Juventus, oversaw the signings of Pierluigi Gollini, Cristian Romero, Bryan Gil, Pape Matar Sarr and Emerson Royal.

But after a seventh-place finish last season and a mixed start to the new campaign, it is clear that the Tottenham project is a work in progress. As such, Paratici will have plenty on the agenda in the coming months.

One area Tottenham may still be looking to strengthen is their midfield. Sarr was their only signing of that position in the summer, but he was instantly loaned back to Metz.

The options currently available to Nuno Espirito Santo are Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Harry Winks, Giovani Lo Celso, Dele Alli, Tanguy Ndombele and Oliver Skipp. However, Ndombele has already been considering his future.

Furthermore, Alli and Winks have reportedly been left out of the squad for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup game against Burnley despite not being injured. It seems their futures may lie away from north London too.

Therefore, Spurs may be hoping to make a signing for the present, not just the future, at the next opportunity.

According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, they have become one of the frontrunners to take Corentin Tolisso from Bayern.

Tottenham sporting director Fabio Paratici has reportedly held talks with Monaco for midfielder Aurelian Tchouameni, with more updates on Dusan Vlahovic and Joe Rodon.

Tolisso joined Bayern in 2017 and won the World Cup with France one year later. However, injuries have slowed him down since. He has already missed six games this season with a calf problem.

Perhaps as a consequence, there are currently doubts about Tolisso’s long-term Bayern future. The 27-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season. Hence, he will either be available for a minimal fee in January or for free in the summer.

Tottenham were already linked with Tolisso in August as part of a potential swap with Ndombele that never materialised. But it seems their interest remains. Furthermore, Gazzetta believe they have the edge over his Italian suitors, Juventus and Inter.

Although both those sides have Champions League football on offer, Spurs still have a strong enough stance to be able to pursue the deal.

Two main rivals for Tolisso

Even so, the path to his signature will not be without its obstacles. The report adds that Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid would be able to compete with Tottenham for Tolisso.

Likewise, the sides from the French and Spanish capitals respectively could both give him the same level of European football he currently has in Munich.

But Tottenham cannot be ruled out of the running at this stage. Rather, Gazzetta believe they have a decent chance of luring him to the Premier League.

It is not clear whether the operation would take place mid-season or when he becomes a free agent.

Tolisso has made five appearances in all competitions for Bayern so far this season, contributing one goal and one assist. His overall record with Bayern since 2017 has been 101 games, 19 goals and 13 assists.

Prior to that, he played 160 times for Lyon with 29 goals and 17 assists. It now seems he may be ready to try a new challenge in the third country of his career.
