Interim boss Cristian Stellini is not the only Tottenham man who could be replaced in the immediate aftermath of the Newcastle thrashing as a senior player is also expected to be ousted by a Serie A star, according to a report.
Tottenham’s season reached a new low on Sunday when they were thrashed 6-1 by Newcastle at St James’ Park. Incredibly, Tottenham were 5-0 down within 22 minutes as the likes of Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isak tore their defence apart.
Spurs fans could not believe their eyes as their team simply disintegrated in the early stages of the game. Stellini had changed from a back five to a back four in the build up to the match but had to alter the team back to its usual formation after the fifth Newcastle goal went in.
There are several reasons why Spurs were so poor on the day. They do not seem to be working hard for their temporary manager, while they were also left confused by the change in tactics.
Spurs seem to be playing without any real purpose as the hunt for a new head coach drags on. That is despite them still being in with a shout of Champions League qualification for next term.
According to the Evening Standard, Stellini is now at serious risk of being axed before the season is over. And club captain Hugo Lloris could follow him this summer, with Spurs pursuing Andre Onana as a goalkeeping replacement.
Lloris’ form has come into question over the past two seasons, but he was particularly poor against the Magpies and was subbed at half time. After the game, the Frenchman claimed it was down to an injury, although it would not be a surprise if he was simply trying to save his reputation.
As per Italian source Calciomercato, Spurs are big fans of Onana and chairman Daniel Levy is drawing up plans to raid Inter for him.
Tottenham plan Inter move to solve big problem
The Nerazzurri are desperate to keep Onana after his brilliant debut campaign at the San Siro, during which he has kept 15 clean sheets in 33 appearances. However, the report outlines how they might be tempted into a sale if Spurs put up the right offer.
It is claimed a Spurs bid worth around €35-40million (£31-35m) would be enough for Inter to give the ‘green light’ for Onana’s exit. It would be a blow for Inter to lose him, but as they brought him in on a free transfer last summer they would be making a big profit.
In a boost for Spurs, Inter have already identified a replacement for the Cameroonian. They have set their sights on Empoli star Guglielmo Vicario as a potential successor in goal, should Onana head to north London.
Spurs pursuing Onana sets up a transfer battle with Manchester United, as Erik ten Hag’s side have been heavily linked with him in recent weeks.
Man Utd need a new keeper of their own due to ongoing concerns surrounding David de Gea. While the 32-year-old remains a great shot-stopper, he struggles to play out with his feet and is also guilty of some big mistakes.
Onana’s spell in Italy could be short-lived as two of England’s biggest clubs are ready to battle it out for his services. Whichever club Onana ends up at, he will undoubtedly improve their defensive record.
