‘Too tempting to refuse…’ Tottenham prepare impressive bid for Napoli star as Levy decides on Lloris successor

Tottenham Hotspur are in a great position to sign highly-rated Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret this summer, according to reports.

The 26-year-old has played an instrumental role in the Italian giants’ recent success, with his team securing the Serie A title with five games to spare.

However, Tottenham are allegedly ‘ready’ to submit an offer for Meret ‘too tempting for Napoli to refuse,’ making a switch to the Premier League likely.

Spurs are set for a summer of change, as club chairman Daniel Levy searches for a new permanent manager, as well as a new director of football.

But, one of the biggest impending changes will come in the goalkeeper position. Hugo Lloris, who has been Tottenham’s main man between the sticks since 2012, will leave the London club at the end of the season.

Now, Levy is scouring the market for a new goalkeeper.  Several high-profile keepers have been linked, such as Porto’s Diogo Costa and Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher.

However, Meret would arguably be an upgrade on both of those options, after helping Napoli to their first Serie A title since 1990.

Tottenham prepare €40m Meret bid

According to NapoliCalcioLive, Tottenham are ‘ready to submit a €40m (approx. £34.7m) offer’ for Meret. His contract is set to expire in 2024, with Napoli having the option to extend it by another year.

However, the report adds that figure would be ‘too tempting’ for Napoli to turn down – because they have already lined up a replacement.

Indeed, Empoli’s Guglielmo Vicario has been identified as the potential candidate to replace Meret, if he is sold this summer.

This season, Meret has made 32 league appearances for Napoli. In the process, he has kept 15 clean sheets and has conceded just 23 goals.

Lloris, on the other hand, has conceded 39 this term, despite only playing 25 games. In fact, Tottenham have conceded 57 goals overall this term – the sixth-worst record in the Premier League.

Clearly, Spurs need a new, quality goalkeeper between the sticks. So, it’s no surprise to see them ‘ready’ to make a sizeable bid for Meret.

Ultimately, though, any potential transfers will have to be signed off by Tottenham’s new manager. Julian Nagelsmann remains the firm favourite to take the helm next season. Although, Xabi Alonso has emerged as another potential candidate.

However, given the Italian’s recent form, neither Nagelsmann nor Alonso are likely to turn down the chance to sign Meret. With that in mind, this is definitely a story to keep an eye on this summer.
