Tottenham could use €50m star in surprise part-exchange deal as Postecoglou looks to improve key area

Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Cristian Romero
Tottenham Hotspur could use Cristian Romero in a surprise part-exchange deal for Juventus centre-back Gleison Bremer, according to reports.
The Argentina international arrived at Spurs for €50m (£43.1m) in 2021 but despite a few good performances, has failed to have a positive impact on their defence.
Indeed, Tottenham conceded 63 goals in the Premier League last season – a key reason why they finished in a disappointing eighth place in the table.
Now, with Ange Postecoglou keen on bolstering his back line, the manager could offload several centre-backs as he looks to make room for reinforcements.
For instance, Japhet Tanganga is expected to leave Spurs this summer. But now, he could potentially be followed out the exit door by Romero.
This is according to journalist Maximiliano Grillo, who claims that Juventus have ‘made contact’ with Tottenham over resigning Romero.
His report adds the Italian side are ‘keen to bring back’ the defender they let go a few years ago. And, they ‘could make a bid’ for him in the coming weeks.
Although, they know a deal ‘will not be easy’ given Romero cost Tottenham €50m. However, this could give Spurs an ideal bargaining chip in negotiations for one of Juventus’ players.
Tottenham could use Romero to sign Bremer
So far, Juventus have ‘only asked’ about signing Romero. But, their interest could give Tottenham a better chance of signing Bremer.
As mentioned, Postecoglou has made signing at least one new centre-back his transfer priority and the 26-year-old has emerged as one of his top targets.
Last season, Bremer made 30 league appearances for Juventus. In the process, he helped his team to 14 clean sheets and scored four goals. His performances also earned him a spot in the Serie A Team of the Season.
So, logically, if the manager does allow Romero to leave this summer, he could use him in negotiations for Bremer.
But, it’s worth noting that he isn’t the only centre-back Postecoglou has his eye on.
Indeed, as reported by TEAMtalk, Tottenham have recently opened ‘direct talks’ with Wolfsburg defender Micky van de Ven. Although, Liverpool are also in the race, so a deal won’t be straightforward.
Bayer Leverkusen star Edmond Tapsoba is another potential option, although, he will be more expensive.
With that in mind, it will be interesting to see if Tottenham entertain any offers for Romero this summer. If they do, Bremer could potentially be used as part of the package.
