Tottenham have Serie A ace in crosshairs as club decides transfer is best course of action

A potential Tottenham, Weston McKennie transfer is on the cards as Juventus have reportedly decided to see the back of the USA midfielder.
Spurs have reportedly been targeting McKennie for some time. Indeed, there have been links between the north London club and the midfielder since last year.
Antonio Conte’s side were supposedly keen in the summer transfer window. It was up in the air as to whether or not Juventus would be willing to sell the midfielder.
Indeed, some reports stated that Paul Pogba’s injury meant they wanted him to remain at the club. Meanwhile, others stated that they were willing to let the American go, regardless of injuries in the squad.
Whatever the Serie A side’s stance was, McKennie ended up staying in Turin.
However, Juventus may now be ready to see the back of him. Calciomercato reports that McKennie will leave the club in 2023.
That report states that they are ready to listen to offers for him, as well as naming Tottenham as the main suitor.
With McKennie’s contract running until 2025, Juve could hold out for a decent sum.
McKennie transfer fitting for Spurs
The transfer of McKennie would be a good one for Tottenham. Conte has made it no secret that he is a fan of signing players from Italy.
Indeed, Dejan Kulusevski, Rodrigo Bentancur and Ivan Perisic have all arrived from Serie A since he has been at the club.
The Italian has gotten the best out of Kulusevski: the winger has contributed to four goals in seven Premier League games this season.
Similarly, Bentancur has been central to Conte’s side, and he has been involved with three league goals this season from the midfield.
As such, McKennie could be the latest player to make the switch from Serie A to Spurs and succeed. The American is only 24 years of age, so has a few years until he is to reach his peak.
With that being said, he has performed well over the past few seasons. He scored three goals in 21 Serie A games last season, and has contributed to two goals in 13 games in all competitions this term.
Indeed, playing in the right environment could mean for even better returns in the future, and Conte could engineer that.
What’s more, the Italian is likely keen to use McKennie’s versatility. The 24-year-old can play in a defensive or attacking midfield role and has also been known to occupy a wide position.
With Spurs regularly opting for a five-at-the-back formation, the fact McKennie can play as a wing-back as well as in the midfield is likely an attractive prospect.
It remains to be seen whether Spurs will target the midfielder. However, given they have been linked multiple times before and they have been named as a suitor, it would not be a surprise if they attempt to make the move.
