Matt Doherty and Dejan Kulusevski celebrating with Sergio Reguilon for Tottenham

Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon faces an uncertain future after his loan spell with Atletico Madrid has not gone to plan so far.

The Spanish defender was signed from Real Madrid in September 2020 on a five-year contract. Across his two seasons with the club, he has made 67 appearances.

As Antonio Conte moulded the squad in a different direction in the summer, Reguilon was sent out on loan to Atletico Madrid.

However, his loan spell in Spain has not gone to plan. The 26-year-old has only played 85 minutes of league football and he is yet to start a match.

Diego Simeone has often used Reinildo and Yannick Carrasco down the left instead of the Tottenham loanee.

Injuries have hampered his development while on loan as Reguilon has struggled with groin and hamstring problems throughout the season.

As a result of his injuries, Football Espana have reported that Simeone is not interested in signing Reguilon on a permanent basis.

This will leave Tottenham in an awkward position in the summer as Reguilon’s market value will have taken a hit this season.

Ivan Perisic has predominantly played on the left-hand side for Spurs this season, although they also have Ryan Sessegnon to compete for the spot.

A new manager at Tottenham might be able to get Reguilon back to his best, but this season will have surely taken a toll on him.

Atletico Madrid eyeing up other Premier League defender

While the Spanish club aren’t interested in Reguilon, they are reportedly keen on signing Leicester City defender Caglar Soyuncu in the summer.

Soyuncu himself is out of contract in a few months’ time and would be a cost-effective signing for the club.

The likes of Newcastle and Liverpool have also been linked with the Turkish defender, but it now seems that Atletico are at the front of the queue.

Transfer insider Graeme Bailey told us: “Eighteen months ago Calgary Soyuncu was seen as one of the Premier League’s top defenders. But now he is going to be leaving Leicester for nothing.

“He will be leaving the King Power on a Bosman alongside Youri Tielemans. And there is no getting away from the fact how frustrated and annoyed the club is.

“I am told that losing such talent, who you could estimate their value at close to £100m on the opening market, has not gone down well within the corridors of power. And they realise they can’t allow this to happen again.

“Safe to say, this could impact on others such as James Maddison. As to say if he does reject their offer of a new contract it would mean a summer sale, as they would be loathed to lose yet another talent for nothing.”

Due to the financial situation at the club, Atletico Madrid will likely be taking advantage of other free transfers in the summer.
