Tottenham insider claims loan star has no chance of earning £18m permanent move after ridicule from French fans

Joe Rodon on loan at Rennes

A Tottenham insider claims that Rennes are unlikely to take up their option to sign defender Joe Rodon on a permanent basis after a poor start to life in France for the Wales international.

The centre-back moved to the Ligue 1 club on loan on August 1, with the deal said to include an option for Rodon to join Rennes permanently for a fee of £18million.

The 24-year-old has started three of Rennes’ four league outings so far but is yet to be on the winning side.

In fact, the only game they won this season was when Rodon was not in the side.

And according to Spurs insider John Wenham, things do not look good for the Welshman.

He has been reading social media comments from Rennes fans on the Tottenham man and it does not look good.

Wenham told Football Insider: “I had a little chuckle to myself the other day after translating a few tweets from Rennes fans.

“They reckon Tottenham have finally got their own back for Rennes qualifying ahead of them in the Europa Conference League last season.

“It’s been a disaster. You can forget about that £20million buy option already, that has gone completely.

“It does not sound like it’s going very well for him. But I will be keeping tabs as the season goes on.”

Rodon only featured three times for Tottenham in the Premier League last season. However, two of those were in the final three games of the campaign.

France move the wrong option for Rodon

Despite his international experience with Wales, Joe Rodon would have been better served going out on loan at another Premier League club.

Having cut his teeth in the Championship with Swansea, moving to a foreign league at just 24 years of age was always going to be a gamble.

The one thing in Rodon’s favour, however, is it’s still early in the campaign and he could just be adapting to French football.

Tottenham will certainly hope he can find that adjustment soon, if they are to recoup a decent fee going forward.

Indeed, Rodon’s days in north London look done all the while Antonio Conte is in charge.

The Italian clearly not does see where the Welshman fits into his back three and remains interested in bringing another centre-back to the club before the transfer window shuts on Thursday evening.
