Tottenham look like they will need to act fast if they want to secure a move for Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries this summer.
The Netherlands star joined Inter after Conte had left as coach at the end of last season, but he’s made a big impression with the San Siro outfit and attracted plenty of attention as a result.
The latest report from Italian outlet Gazzetta Dello Sport claims that there is plenty of talk about the 26-year-old heading to the Premier League, with Spurs mentioned ‘above all’.
However, sporting director Fabio Paratici and boss Antonio Conte will need to act quickly to strike a deal.
Gazzetta states that Bayern Munich are extremely keen on signing the player. Indeed, the report adds that Bayern like his ‘growth and dedication’, as well as his ‘technique and athletics’.
Dumfries is not the only right-sided player on Bayern’s radar, with Ajax’s Noussair Mazraoui also a target. That could open the door for Tottenham, if the German outfit are undecided who to sign.
Bayern are also looking to sign Dumfries as a right-winger when his nominally a right-back or wing-back.
Conte is expected to be in the market for two new wing-backs this summer. That is largely due to the fact that the Italian is not convinced by both Emerson Royal and Sergio Reguilon.
The latter has been linked with a return to Spain, while Royal could be more useful as a squad option rather than first-choice.
On paper, Dumfries looks to be an upgrade for Tottenham, having scored five goals and added five assists this season.
He will not come cheap, however, with Gazzetta suggesting Spurs would need at least €30m to sign him.
Dumfries more polished than Royal
Denzel Dumfries would certainly give Conte a more consistent performer in the right wing-back role, if he was to sign.
The Inter man has won 32 caps for the Netherlands. He also has all the right physical attributes to be a Premier League success.
While Emerson Royal can look good on his day, there are too many occasions when he’s a weak link. His delivery is not always up to scratch and his defending can leave a lot to be desired.
That leaves Tottenham with a difficult decision. Do they stick with a 23-year-old who could develop into a decent performer, or do they splash out more cash on a readymade top-flight player?
Fabio Paratici it’s over to you!
