Tottenham have been tipped to ditch their proposed move from Middlesbrough right-back Djed Spence in favour of a swoop for Borussia Dortmund star Thomas Meunier.
Spurs are on the brink of announcing deals for experienced duo Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster. However, more signings are expected to follow in a major shake-up of the first-team squad at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Spence has long been touted for a switch to north London, with rivals Arsenal are keen on a deal.
However, after he secured promotion to the Premier League on loan at Nottingham Forest, the 21-year-old is now being tipped to make a permanent switch to the City Ground.
But that could be good news for Tottenham, according to Sky Sports’ Joe Thomlinson.
He believes that Conte should be chasing a more experienced player like Meunier instead, not Spence.
Thomlinson told Football Daily’s Sunday Vibes: “We’ve seen him do it everywhere he’s gone, Conte – he signs players that are upwards of 26 that have been proven at European and elite league level. I’d be incredibly surprised to see a player like Djed Spence arrive at Tottenham.
“I think somebody like Thomas Meunier is a more likely option, to be honest with you, than a Djed Spence.
“I think he’d rather be opening up the doors for 29/30-year-old wing-backs and full-backs that have been at the top level and done it consistently.”
Experience card a myth with Conte
Conte has shown faith in youngster Ryan Sessegnon in the closing stages of the season.
However, with Perisic seemingly being brought in to cover the left wing-back slot, Conte my decide he wants a more youthful option on the right.
That would open the door to Spence, or another linked player in Max Aarons. Sessegnon could even be given a go on that side, if Emerson Royal or Matt Doherty are shown the door.
Meunier remains a good player, scoring two goals and adding five assists for Dortmund last season.
However, Conte is already concerned that his central midfield is a little one-paced, so he needs wing-backs with pace. Perisic, despite being 33, still has that Meunier is not quick in any way.
So with that in mind, a move for Spence or Aarons still apears move likely than Meunier.
