Tottenham transfer news: Antonio Conte considering blowing third of ENIC cash injection on Allan Saint-Maximin

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte is reportedly considering making a move for Newcastle winger Allan Saint-Maximin, which could blow a third of the club’s recent cash injection.
Spurs are expected to spend heavily this summer after the ENIC Group, which owns a majority share in the north London club, pumped more investment into the club after they booked a Champions League spot on the final day of the Premier League season.
ENIC have injected a further £150million into Tottenham, which is expected to go towards player acquisitions.
And the Daily Mail states that Conte is keen on bringing maverick Toon winger Saint-Maximin, who is valued at £50m, to the club.
Spurs are already close to announcing the free transfer signing of keeper Fraser Forster. However, there are expected to be many more incomings and outgoings in a busy summer.
Sporting director Fabio Paratici’s phone is likely to be red-hot after being tasked with building a squad for Conte that can compete in both the Premier League and Champions League next season.
Alessandro Bastoni, Djed Spence, Yves Bissouma, Filip Kostic, Ivan Perisic, Adama Traore, Richarlison and now Saint-Maximin are all known targets.
Spurs stars on chopping block
And while a number of new signings are expected, several top stars could be moved on too.
Record signing Tanguy Ndombele is almost certain to leave, along with Giovani Lo Celso, Harry Winks and Joe Rodon.
There are also considerable doubts as to whether wing-backs Sergio Reguilon and Matt Doherty will be at Tottenham next season.
A massive turnover of players is not really ideal, unless Spurs get their business done early. With no major tournaments on this summer, Tottenham need to act fast to get new signings in to work with Conte as quickly as possible.
However, they’ve already shown signs they are going that way with the early capture of Forster.
Saint-Maximin not really a Tottenham ‘need’
There’s no questioning Saint-Maximin’s talent, indeed on his day he is virtually unplayable. However, there are three main reasons why a deal is highly unlikely to happen.
Firstly, the Frenchman operates on the left side of Newcastle’s attack. That is the exact same position the outstanding Son Heung-Min fills for Spurs.
Meanwhile, there are strong rumours that Conte wants to be reunited with Inter star Ivan Perisic.
The Croatian is in the latter stages of his career and will accept more of a squad role. Add in that he will also be a free transfer, and it appears to be a no-brainer of a deal.
And finally, Saint-Maximin is such a maverick that you never quite know what you will get. And that is not really the sort of mold of player that Conte likes in his team.
Adding all that up, a transfer to Tottenham does not appear likely to happen – plus Newcastle are not in a position where they need to sell.
