Tottenham transfer latest: Fraser Forster to spark influx of quality signings with medical due this week

Antonio Conte chats to Fabio Paratici of Tottenham

Tottenham are closing on a deal for Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster, with a medical set to take place for the experienced stopper this week.

The 34-year-old is out of contract next month and has been discussing his future with a number of clubs. However, he is expected to complete a switch to north London, if his medical checks out.

Spurs had initially been chasing a deal for West Brom’s Sam Johnstone as a homegrown signing. However, the England stopper is considered more of a No.1, so Forster fits the bill better in that regard.

The 6ft 7in stopper made 24 appearances for Southampton this season, including 19 in the Premier League.

However, he has largely been second choice to Alex McCarthy since returning from a loan spell at Celtic in 2019-20.

Forster will come straight in as Hugo Lloris’ understudy after the Frenchman signed a new contract in January.

As for further additions to Conte’s squad, rumours are circulating of Spurs jumping ahead of Arsenal in the race for Gabriel Jesus.

Conte wants an out-and-out striker as a back-up option for Harry Kane. However, trying to do business with City might be tricky after Tottenham slammed the door shut when Pep Guardiola’s men tried to sign the England skipper throughout last summer.

The north London club are also expected to try and bring another centre-back, potentially new wing-backs and a midfielder.

Bastoni tipped to fill pivotal Conte role

Inter Milan’s left-sided defender Alessandro Bastoni is being tipped to fill a role in Tottenham’s back three. While that would be harsh on Ben Davies, the fact that the Welshman covers centre-back and left-back still makes him a valuable asset.

Frankfurt star Filip Kostic has also been linked with a move and could replace Sergio Reguilon. The Spaniard has been tipped to head home this season after not always being first-choice under Conte.

While his exit would likely upset the Tottenham faithful, Kostic would also be a quality addition.

Right wing-back is another area Conte is looking to upgrade and Atletico Madrid’s Yannick Carrasco remains their top option there.

In terms of a potential midfield upgrade, the likes of Yves Bissouma and John McGinn are still targets. However, the latest name on their radar is Napoli star Piotr Zielinski.

The Poland international currently has a £95m exit clause so Daniel Levy will have to work his magic again. Zielinski would, however, give Spurs more creativity centrally, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur struggling a little in that department.

However, for any of those potential signings to be made, Tottenham must clear the decks first and also complete the expected permanent signings of Dejan Kulusevski and Christian Romero.
