Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic remains an option for Tottenham, with the player’s agent reportedly ‘intensifying his contacts’ with the club.
Antonio Conte is still thought to be in the hunt for one more centre-back, along with a new playmaker, as Spurs prepare for a return to the Champions League while also looking to battle for silverware domestically.
Conte has already added Clement Lenglet from Barcelona this summer. However, Joe Rodon has been allowed to move on, while doubts continue to surround the future of Japhet Tanganga.
Rodon has moved to French club Rennes on loan with a view to a permanent deal. AC Milan, meanwhile, are known to want Tangana.
Tottenham boss Conte landed Lenglet after missing out on top target Alessandro Bastoni. However, there are still fears that the Spurs defence could be their Achilles heel when it comes to facing the top sides at home and in Europe.
To that end, the north London club are being tipped to swoop for Fiorentina man Milenkovic.
Tuttosport reports that the player’s agent, Fali Ramadani, is ‘intensifying’ talks with Conte’s men.
Tottenham not the only Milenkovic suitors
Milenkovic has been heavily linked with a move away from the Serie A side again this summer, with several clubs in Europe believed to be interested in his signature.
West Ham and Liverpool have previously been linked with the Serbian. However, Spurs are now seemingly at the front of the queue to snatch the centre-back.
Tuttosport adds that Tottenham ‘like’ the defender ‘above all’ other targets and that his agent his doing his best to try and push through a transfer.
Conte certainly knows the qualities of the player from his time managing in Italy. And a deal could well be on the cards, given that Milenkovic has only a year left on his contract.
A fee just over £30million could be enough to seal the transfer, which for a 24-year-old could be good business.
Tottenham may have to fight with Inter Miland and Juventus for his services though.
Milenkovic a likely swap for Dier
While Milenkovic has improved significantly from his early days in Florence, when he was still a little raw and new to Serie A, it’s tough to see where he fits in at Tottenham.
The Serbian can play the right side of a three or centrally, but with Cristian Romero a certainty to start, that leaves Eric Dier’s place in question.
And that is where doubts over this transfer come in, with Conte a big fan of Dier’s qualities.
It’s true that the England man has not always been a firm favourite of the Spurs faithful. However, his game has come on significantly under Conte, who trusts Dier in that pivotal central role.
Dier was excellent in the second half of last season and in particular the run-in as fourth spot was secured.
The 28-year-old also has a strong understanding with Romero and Ben Davies on the left. And while Davies could end up being replaced by Lenglet, it’s unlikely that Conte will want to change two of his back three for the new campaign.
To that end, spending £30m-plus on Milenkovic seems a bit fanciful. Especially when signing a new playmaker is more of a priority.
