Tottenham have been told to push themselves away from an incredible move for a big-name striker, as a pundit has revealed which position should be prioritised instead.

Tottenham are at risk of losing talisman Harry Kane this summer. He has entered the final 12 months of his contract with the club and it is unclear whether an extension will be agreed. Kane might decide against penning a new deal in order to join one of Europe’s elite clubs and try to end his long wait for a trophy.

There was a big double update on Kane’s situation earlier today (Friday). As per German journalist Christian Falk, the England star may have played his last game for Tottenham as Bayern are trying to sign him before August 6, which is when Ange Postecoglou’s side play Shakhtar Donetsk in their next pre-season friendly.

According to The Telegraph, Bayern officials will soon fly to London to engage in a fresh round of transfer talks with their Spurs counterparts. After previously bidding £60million and £70m for Kane, they could now offer as much as £86m to strike an agreement.

Surprisingly, reports in Spain have named Spurs as one of the clubs interested in Kylian Mbappe, who has been put up for sale by Paris Saint-Germain after publicly revealing his decision not to extend his contract from 2024 to 2025.

Mbappe would be an incredible replacement for Kane as he is arguably the best forward in the world. However, former Spurs and Aston Villa right-back Alan Hutton has cast doubt over whether Spurs have the money to sign the Frenchman, who will likely cost a world-record fee this summer. Hutton also explained how Spurs must save money to improve their centre-back options instead.

“I would be very surprised if that [Mbappe to Spurs] happened,” the pundit said in an interview with Football Insider.

“There will be a lot of teams out there chasing Mbappe, he is arguably the best player in the world, the money is just incredible.

Pundit ‘cannot see’ Kylian Mbappe joining Tottenham

“I do not see Tottenham paying that amount for anybody if I am truly honest. I can’t see him going to Saudi either but I just think there are some big teams out there that he would rather go to.

“It all boils down to money, I can’t see them spending that amount of money.

“To be brutally honest after what I’ve seen of pre-season I would be sorting out the defence first, I would not spend £260m on a striker when it is obvious the defence needs working on.”

There is a chance Spurs might not actually land a big-name forward to replace Kane anyway. Following Richarlison’s hat-trick in a recent pre-season friendly win for Spurs, Postecoglou said he ‘really likes’ the Brazilian.

Spurs have made several attempts to improve their defensive options in recent weeks. Indeed, they remain in talks for Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba and Wolfsburg’s Micky van de Ven. However, they have to yet to reach an agreement for either player and must therefore move quickly to prevent a transfer hijack from another team.

Meanwhile, Spurs have also missed out on the capture of a Prem star as he has agreed personal terms with a French club, a report has claimed.
