Davinson Sanchez nods Tottenham to victory deep into stoppage time

Davinson Sanchez scored deep into injury time to earn Tottenham a 1-0 win over Watford to boost their top-four hopes at Vicarage Road on New Year’s Day.

Man City had inflicted an undeserved defeat on Arsenal earlier in the day and Spurs left it late to capitalise. Antonio Conte made two changes from the Tottenham side who were frustrated by Southampton.

Lucas Moura and Oliver Skipp were named in the team with Harry Winks and Dele Alli among the substitutes.

Watford manager Claudio Ranieri made three changes from the side which lost 4-1 to West Ham on December 28.

William Troost-Ekong returned to the side, along with Ken Sema and Imran Louza while Tom Cleverley returned to the bench after a slight hamstring problem.

Watford, who had won just one of their last 17 league games against Tottenham, started brightly.

A neat throughball from Josh King picked out  Emmanuel Dennis 30 yards from goal. The Watford striker dribbled through a couple of Spurs challenges only to scuff his shot straight at Hugo Lloris.

On 17 minutes, following a lofted ball in by Moura, a Cathcart header found Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg on the edge of the area. But the Danish midfielder skewed his strike just over Daniel Bachmann’s bar.

Bachmann then saved from Harry Kane before making a better stop to deny Sergio Reguilon. Bachmann flung himself to his left in order to tip away the powerful effort.

Kane got a glimpse of goal on the half-hour mark. But the England striker fired wide of the right-hand post after Watford handed him possession.

Watford dropped deep

Watford dropped back and Spurs increased their possession, but Watford managed to go in 0-0 at half-time.

Spurs started on top in the second half Reguilon, after a forceful run, could only shoot harmlessly into the side-netting.

Kane then took a pass from Son, held off a defender, before forcing Bachmann to tip over his shot.

Lloris then made a fine stop to deny the hosts. He dived full length to palm away a goalbound King drive from the left.

With 66 minutes on the clock Spurs came close when Son’s improvised flick towards goal just evaded the far post.

Skipp then made way for Winks, as Spurs looked for the elusive goal.

And from a clipped cross by Moura, Son latched onto the ball with a volley which Bachmann managed to save.

Watford looked to have won a penalty with 10 minutes to go.

Pedro got through on goal, but he was halted just inside the box by Lloris, who made a challenges low down.

It looked a penalty, but the referee waved played on and VAR concurred with the referee’s on-pitch judgement.

Lo Celso and Bryan Gil arrived as Spurs looked to grab a late winner and six minutes into stoppage time they did exactly that.

Sanchez headed in from close range after Son had whipped in an inswinging free-kick in from the left flank.
