West Ham plot move for free agent Adnan Januzaj, as David Moyes tipped to reunite with former Man Utd player

Adnan Januzaj

David Moyes could reunite with Adnan Januzaj at West Ham amid claims the east London outfit are planning to make a move for him.

Januzaj spent time in the Anderlecht academy before joining Manchester United U18s in 2011. He enjoyed an impressive debut senior campaign with the Red Devils during 2013-14, notching four goals and six assists in 35 matches.

The winger was one of the few positives from a dismal season under Moyes, who was sacked in April and temporarily replaced by Ryan Giggs before Louis van Gaal’s appointment.

But Januzaj struggled under Moyes’ permanent replacement and didn’t manage any goal contributions the following campaign.

He had loan spells at Borussia Dortmund and Sunderland – where he linked up with Moyes again – before leaving Manchester United in July 2017. Spanish side Real Sociedad paid around £9million to land the Belgium international.

Januzaj has shown signs of improvement while in La Liga, mainly thanks to him getting regular game time.

In the 2021-22 campaign, he made 44 appearances in all competitions. The 27-year-old found the net five times, as well as chipping in with three assists, during those games.

Januzaj will become a free agent on July 1 as he has no plans to extend his spell with Sociedad. And a return to the Premier League has now come into view.

Adnan Januzaj appears in West Ham sights

According to Sport Witness, who cite reports in Spain, West Ham have Januzaj ‘on their agenda’.

The wide man is a target for Real Betis, but West Ham are preparing to rival them for his signature.

The pursuit mainly stems from Moyes, who knows Januzaj well and believes he can get the best out of the player once again.

The Hammers like the fact Januzaj is available on a free. This will allow them to bolster their attacking ranks without it affecting discussions for players in other positions.

Januzaj also has experience playing in Europe. He made seven appearances in last season’s Europa League as Sociedad went out in the intermediate stage. With West Ham set to play in the Europa Conference League next term, Januzaj could prove to be a decent signing.

West Ham fans might want the club to pursue more established names or stars with higher potential. But Januzaj would be a shrewd capture who could bolster Moyes’ squad, which the Scot definitely needs.

Manchester United supporters, meanwhile, would find it fascinating to come up against Januzaj five years after he left Old Trafford. It would be intriguing for them to see if he can still make an impact in the Premier League.

Elsewhere, West Ham face competition from an English rival as they look to re-sign Alphonse Areola.
