West Ham have emerged as potential suitors for Torino defender Perr Schuurs after he was recently linked with Liverpool, according to a top Italian source.
Schuurs enjoyed a successful debut season in Serie A with Torino after a transfer from Ajax. It has led to speculation about what his next step could be – and how soon he may make it. There have been rumours of interest from Liverpool in recent days.
Earlier this week, Tuttosport suggested Jurgen Klopp wants Schuurs in his Liverpool squad next season. To get his man, the manager might be willing to sanction a €30m (£25.7m) move.
However, Liverpool are not the only contenders to sign Schuurs. In fact, they don’t even get a mention in the latest update by Sky Sport Italia transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio.
Writing on his own website, Di Marzio has revealed that West Ham are ready to make contact regarding their own move for Schuurs.
The Europa Conference League champions want to find out what Torino’s requests would be to let Schuurs go. Di Marzio’s report makes no reference to Tuttosport‘s estimation of €30m. If a move is viable, the Hammers could make an offer to add the Dutchman to their defence.
At present, David Moyes can call upon Nayef Aguerd, Kurt Zouma, Thilo Kehrer and Angelo Ogbonna at centre-back.
Once the sale of Declan Rice to Arsenal goes through, West Ham will have some serious funds to play with. In theory, they could invest in multiple areas of their squad, not just the defensive midfield role Rice will be vacating.
West Ham could give Schuurs first Premier League opportunity
At the age of 23, Schuurs might be ready for his first taste of Premier League football. He could also be useful to West Ham on their Europa League journey, for which they will require adequate depth.
Torino still have Schuurs under contract until 2026 with the option of a further year, per the arrangement they agreed to last summer.
He has made 33 appearances for them so far and helped Ivan Juric’s side to a 10th-place finish in Serie A.
Schuurs has also been linked with Crystal Palace recently in case Marc Guehi or Joachim Andersen are poached away. Coincidentally, Guehi has been linked with Newcastle, who have also been listed as contenders for Schuurs.
A move to Newcastle would provide a platform for Schuurs to play in the Champions League. With West Ham or Liverpool, he could experience the Europa League instead.
At Liverpool, Schuurs could have the opportunity to link up with his Dutch compatriot Virgil van Dijk at the back. There are no other players from the Netherlands in the current West Ham squad, in contrast.
