West Ham approach Leeds Utd over impressive midfield capture, with Brazilian star also on Rice replacement list

West Ham have made a move for Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams, according to reports, as they widen their focus while searching for a successor to Declan Rice.

Rice has been Arsenal’s top target in the early phases of the summer transfer window. Now, it is close to being confirmed that West Ham will be selling their captain to the Gunners for up to £105million.

Obviously, West Ham will have to reinvest some of that money into signings of their own. The midfield role that Rice will be vacating is an obvious area they will need to replenish.

In that regard, the Yorkshire Evening Post has followed up claims from the Daily Mail about Adams being of interest to West Ham by relaying that an approach has been made to Leeds.

Adams only joined Leeds last summer from RB Leipzig. He was one of their better performers in an overall disappointing season that ended in relegation.

Several Leeds players will be targeted by Premier League clubs following their drop to the Championship. Adams is one of those that most deserves a bigger stage than the second tier, it could be argued.

Indeed, TEAMtalk sources recently revealed that Adams has told Leeds he wants to leave them for a Premier League club.

Therefore, West Ham have tested the waters to see if they would be able to land the USA star. Leeds still have Adams under contract until 2027.

The size of any potential bid the Hammers might make for the 24-year-old remains to be seen.

In addition to lifting Adams back up to the Premier League, they would also be able to offer him involvement in the Europa League next season after they won the 2022-23 Conference League.

Adams among other options for West Ham

However, just as there are other suitors queuing up for Adams (the YEP refers to Aston Villa, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest), he is not the only option on West Ham’s shortlist. They might have already made a bid for Denis Zakaria after his loan spell at Chelsea from Juventus ended, if reports in Italy are to be believed.

James Ward-Prowse is another possible option they could pick up from a relegated side. The England international could leave Southampton for the first time in his career after their drop to the Championship.

Elsewhere, new information is filtering through about West Ham interest in Matheus Franca. According to Football London, the Hammers are ready to rival Crystal Palace and Newcastle for the Brazilian starlet.

Currently plying his trade for Flamengo, Franca is worth more than £13.5m, since Newcastle saw an offer of that size rejected in January.

Franca represents the kind of young profile who could develop that would be favoured by new West Ham technical director Tim Steidten.

However, he is more of an attacking midfielder, so would seemingly be an additional recruit for West Ham’s midfield rather than a direct successor to Rice.
