New West Ham star on the radar of Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs after rejecting contract offer

Ben Johnson of West Ham

Jarrod Bowen is not the only West Ham player who could be signed by Liverpool, as they are reportedly targeting one of his team-mates – though interest also stems from Arsenal and Tottenham.

West Ham are enjoying another impressive campaign under Scottish manager David Moyes. They are firmly in the race for Champions League qualification, having won 13 of 27 league matches so far.

That puts them fifth in the Premier League table, just two points behind Manchester United who occupy fourth.

Bowen has been dangerous in front of goal this term, notching 12 goals in 37 appearances. He has also provided 11 assists for his team-mates in that time.

Liverpool are apparently looking at Bowen as a long-term replacement for Mo Salah on the right wing. But he is not the only Hammers ace impressing scouts on the red side of Liverpool.

Versatile defender Ben Johnson is also a target for Jurgen Klopp’s side, according to reports in Spain (via football.london).

Johnson, who can operate as a full-back on either flank, was recently offered a bumper new contract by West Ham. He is ‘happy’ at the London Stadium but turned the deal down, according to The Athletic.

West Ham ace wanted by trio

And that decision could take him to one of the biggest clubs in England. Liverpool hold an interest in the 22-year-old, as do Arsenal and Spurs.

The trio of clubs have been impressed by Johnson’s attacking output, as well as his defensive reliability. He is emerging into a top full-back, despite having less than two seasons of top-flight experience.

According to the original report, Liverpool want quality competition for Trent Alexander-Arnold. Neco Williams does not provide this and was therefore sent out on loan to Fulham.

Johnson is not at Alexander-Arnold’s level, although his development is certainly encouraging for Reds chiefs.

It is a similar type of interest for Arsenal. They seemingly want Johnson to compete with Takehiro Tomiyasu for a starting berth.

Then there’s Antonio Conte’s Tottenham. Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty are both available to the Italian currently. But neither have been exceptional since Conte’s arrival, with Johnson a potential improvement.

David Moyes issues Yarmolenko update

Meanwhile, David Moyes has revealed West Ham forward Andriy Yarmolenko has returned to first-team training, although he is ‘very upset’ over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The forward was recently given compassionate leave by West Ham due to the turmoil inflicted on his nation by neighbours Russia.

Yarmolenko missed the recent victory over Wolves as a result, although he could feature in the FA Cup tie against Southampton on Wednesday.

“He came back in and did a bit of light training, I had a good chat with him,” Moyes said. “Obviously he’s really upset with the whole situation, which many people are.

“We won’t rush him. I’ve asked him to come in today and see how he feels. If he feels fine and up to it then he’ll travel with the team. If he doesn’t, then we’ll give him some more days off.

“Things can change very quickly but we’ll give him the chance to go with his own feelings.

“He’s really upset. He’s got lots of family members in Ukraine and friends and he’s worried for everybody and realises the difficulty that’s going on, and he’s a long way away and can’t do an awful lot about it.”
