Bump in road while negotiating £13million Emerson Palmieri deal leads West Ham to consider other options

Emerson Palmieri, Lyon, April 2022.

West Ham are reportedly considering other options at left-back, after walking away from a deal to sign Emerson Palmieri due to his wage demands.

It was recently revealed that West Ham were keen on Emerson. In fact, the Hammers are reported to have tabled an offer of £13million for the Blues ace.

A deal for the Italian would have made him West Ham’s seventh signing of the summer.

It seemed to be a transfer that had a good chance of happening, too. Chelsea’s left-back stocks are brimming, especially after signing Marc Cucurella.

What’s more, Emerson spent last season out on loan, and is seemingly not required at Stamford Bridge. As such, it would appear that the Blues would have no problem in green-lighting his sale.

However, a bump in the road has meant that West Ham have ended their pursuit.

The Sun reports that Emerson’s wage demands have led to the Hammers putting an end to talks.

David Moyes’ side are reportedly considering other options, given they have shelved their interest the Chelsea man.

The report does mention that there is a slim chance of West Ham going back in for the Italian at some point.

However, if his demands are too high now, it seems unlikely that they would change their minds down the line.

Left-back signing ideal despite terminating Emerson interest

The signing of a left-back still seems ideal for West Ham. Aaron Cresswell is the only out-and-out left-back in the squad, and he is 32 years of age.

As such, he may not be able to perform at the highest level for too much longer. Indeed, adding to the depth and quality in the position seems a smart move.

West Ham battled for a top-four spot for much of last season, before they eventually ended the campaign in seventh. Indeed, they also made it to the semi-finals of the Europa League.

They have already recruited well this summer, and continuing to add good players to the side will help their chances of making that next step in the future.

As such, despite ending their pursuit of Emerson, they should still attempt to improve where they can, and a new left-back seems wise.
