West Ham striker search leads to Marseille’s doorstep as AFCON ace becomes target

West Ham are in the picture for Senegal star Bamba Dieng, as a means to sort out an apparent problem position at the club seemingly gather pace.

The Hammers’ need for a second striker has been apparent for much of the season. Michail Antonio is the only recognised senior striker available to David Moyes.

When Antonio has been unavailable, Jarrod Bowen has had to deputise as a No.9. What’s more, Antonio suffered an eight-game goal drought in the Premier League between October and December.

As such, adding a second option would be a smart move. Not only would the Hammers have cover up front case of injury, but would also be able to replace Antonio when he does not perform.

RMC Sport, via Sport Witness, claims West Ham are in the picture for Marseille’s Dieng. The striker is currently at the African Cup on Nations, and recently scored his first Senegal goal.

He is also Marseille’s fourth-highest goal-scorer this season, with four in 19.

At just 21 years old, Dieng seems a capable player, showing that in his limited opportunities at AFCON. While he is primarily a striker, he can also be used as a wide man, that versatility makes him a good asset.

West Ham are reported to have enquired about the forward. Furthermore, Marseille are in a tough financial spot, and selling up could help them out.

Marseille are reportedly likely to accept an offer in the region of €10million.

However, with the January window nearing its end, and Dieng still at AFCON, negotiations could prove tough.

RMC Sport claims that both Burnley and Newcastle are also keen on the Senegal forward.

What’s more, Marseille reportedly understand that ‘some offers may not be refused’.

While joining West Ham would likely be the best course of action, they may be trumped by Newcastle’s war chest.

With the Magpies’ form on the rise, and Dieng likely to play an important role in their squad, that move may prove a decent move for both sides.
