West Ham rebuff ridiculous AC Milan attempt to snatch defensive ace

AC Milan have reportedly ‘made an attempt’ to sign West Ham’s Issa Diop, with the Hammers not willing to sell for one key reason.

West Ham begun the season in top form, beating the likes of Leicester City and Tottenham at the beginning of the campaign. Indeed, the Hammers have sat within the top four for much of the season.

However, a recent drop in form has resulted in them dropping out of the Champions League places, into fifth.

The Hammers’ drop in form could be attributed to a couple of reasons. Indeed, the side have been defensively strong for much of the current campaign.

However, Angelo Ogbonna was injured in the Hammers’ 3-2 victory against Liverpool in November. A month later, Kurt Zouma suffered a hamstring injury in a win against Chelsea.

Indeed, injuries to both preferred central defenders has left the squad depth light. What’s more, those injuries left the Hammers with only two recognised senior centre-backs, Craig Dawson and Diop.

As such, AC Milan’s apparent approach to sign Diop, as reported by CalcioMercato, is all the more ridiculous.

The report states West Ham are ‘not so convinced’ with Milan’s approach. Indeed, selling one of only two centre-backs available to the side would clearly make no sense.

What’s more, West Ham are pushing for a Champions League place. As such, selling a key player would have a massively negative impact on the side.

Indeed, it seems highly unlikely that Diop will be leaving West Ham this season.

Armando Broja shoots while James Tarkowski slides in during Southampton vs Burnley, October 2021

With the defensive depth short at West Ham, the side are hopeful of bringing in a quality centre-back.

James Tarkowski has been on the Hammers’ shortlist for a while. Indeed, they may have a shot at signing the Burnley man in January.

Tarkowski’s contract expires in the summer, and a move looks likely now, given Burnley will likely want to cash in.

West Ham are reportedly rivalled by Newcastle in the pursuit of the England international. Though surely West Ham would be a better move for Tarkowski, at least for this season.
