West Ham willing to match asking price for flying full-back Joakim Maehle

Joakim Maehle, Atalanta v Napoli April 2022

West Ham could meet the €15m asking price for Atalanta full-back Joakim Maehle this summer, according to reports in Italy.

Links between Maehle and West Ham emerged last week. The wing-back has also been suggested as a target for fellow capital club Tottenham Hotspur.

Maehle was a member of the Denmark squad that reached the semi-finals of Euro 2020, before being beaten by England. Now, he could move to play his club football in the Premier League.

According to Corriere Della Sera, Maehle may leave Atalanta this summer. He would be doing so three years before the end of his contract.

The article suggests West Ham could soon make a €15m (£12.8m) offer for Maehle, which matches up with the valuation Atalanta are holding out for.

Therefore, if West Ham are ready to submit an offer, they would have a good chance of getting their man.

Maehle is capable of playing in either full-back position. If he joined West Ham, he would be competing with Vladimir Coufal and Ben Johnson on his natural right-hand side, or Aaron Cresswell and Arthur Masuaku on the left.

And at the age of 25, West Ham would likely benefit from the prime years of his career by signing him.

West Ham may be next part of Joakim Maehle progression

A move from Atalanta to the Hammers would be an interesting one for Maehle. The Serie A side have punched above their weight in recent years in Serie A, but only finished eighth last season.

Similarly, West Ham have been trying to upset the natural order in the Premier League. They will have Europa Conference League action on offer next season after coming seventh last term.

Therefore, it will be the second season in a row in which they will be involved in continental competition.

Maehle may have a decision to make if he wants to be a part of it. Joining West Ham would also give him a first route into the Premier League.

He is certainly a capable player, but much will depend on what he wants, given that the two clubs seem to be on a similar page.
