Journalist makes concerning West Ham United transfer claim amid search to strengthen squad

David Moyes after a West Ham match in the Europa League

Journalist Paul Brown has delivered a slightly concerning update on West Ham’s hopes of adding more quality signings to David Moyes’ squad this summer.

The Hammers have so far brought in three new players, with Rennes defender Nayef Aguerd, Paris Saint-Germain stopper Alphonse Areola and Swansea City midfielder Flynn Downes all arriving on permanent deals at the London Stadium.

There have also been exits, however, with Mark Noble retiring and Ryan Fredericks and Andriy Yarmolenko being released.

Moyes is hopeful he will be able to strengthen his squad further, with several names linked to the club.

The Hammers are known to have had two offers rejected for Lille’s Amadou Onana. To that end, they are now expected to focus on trying to sign other midfielders.

Chelsea striker Armando Broja is also a player being linked with the club. Meanwhile, Moyes remains a big fan of free agent Jesse Lingard after his loan stint with West Ham in 2020-21.

But speaking to Give Me Sport, Daily Star journalist Brown suggested that Moyes may not have the funds to land the quality signings he wants.

He said: “West Ham are saying they want to end the window having signed five or six players.

“It’s a strange situation at West Ham because there’s a lot of talk that they don’t have the money people thought they had. Although they still seem to be targeting a quite high calibre of player.”

Striker has to be Moyes’ focus

A striker does appear to be Moyes’ main focus of attention. Indeed, the need to sign competition for Michail Antonio is critical.

Broja is a top option but the frontman is also on the radar of the likes of Newcastle and Everton.

Antonio has often struggled with injuries, with the lack of a backup option often a problem.

Midfield is less of a concern, especially with Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek being one the best combinations around.

Much now depends though on what sort of funds Moyes does have available and the quality of player he can get.
