West Ham have joined Leeds United in the race to sign Blackburn Rovers hotshot Ben Brereton Diaz, who looks increasingly likely to be available in January according to reports.
Brereton Diaz has been in fine form in the Championship over the past couple of seasons. The Stoke-born Chile international scored 22 goals in the second tier last season and has nine to his name from 20 appearances so far this season.
Out of contract in June, it seems unlikely he will be playing below the top flight for much longer. Blackburn Rovers are unlikely to be able to keep him, since he has not indicated a willingness to extend his contract.
Naturally, a plethora of clubs have been keeping tabs on Brereton Diaz. It has been known for a couple of months that Leeds United will be one of the potential bidders in January, which will be Blackburn’s last chance to cash in on him.
However, Football Insider has since updated that West Ham are also looking to lift him to the Premier League.
According to the online outlet, David Moyes is a major admirer of the 23-year-old. As such, West Ham scouts went to see Brereton Diaz score the winner against Huddersfield Town over the weekend.
Now, they will be taking further steps towards signing him in January. Of course, they already added to their attack in the summer by bringing in Gianluca Scamacca over the summer.
But West Ham believe Brereton Diaz can complement what they already have, since he could cover in any attacking role.
What’s more, they might be an appealing destination since they have European football on offer, having progressed to the knockout stage of the Europa Conference League.
Brereton Diaz could be up for a European challenge. In fact, he would even be willing to play for a club on the continent, which probably isn’t too much of a surprise after how he has adapted to playing in South America for his adopted country.
The report from Football Insider has reminded that Sevilla could be in contention to sign him. Clubs like them could tie him to a pre-contract agreement from January.
But Blackburn have a glimmer of hope that they may be able to cash in on their prize asset. Hence, bids from the likes of Leeds or West Ham might actually be welcome.
It remains to be seen how much Rovers would be able to earn by selling Brereton Diaz at this stage of his contract.
Who needs Brereton Diaz more?
Clearly, Brereton Diaz should have a lot of options to consider. He will have to make his next choice of club carefully.
There is an argument to say Leeds would need Brereton Diaz more than West Ham, if they can convince him. Patrick Bamford has not been as reliable as he once was, with several of their younger attackers instead looking more impactful.
But it would be a risk to rely on youth for a full season, so a more polished option might be needed. Brereton Diaz is still young himself, but has been building up plenty of experience and could contribute.
West Ham may be eyeing another long-term successor to Michail Antonio. But it probably makes sense for them to stick with Scamacca as their main man for now.
That said, the opportunity to sign Brereton Diaz might be one they do not want to miss out on. It is easy to see why their interest is there.
Over in Spain, meanwhile, Sevilla have started the season poorly. Therefore, they could need an injection of quality in January, which Brereton Diaz could provide.
Coincidentally, he is not the only forward to have been linked with both Leeds and West Ham in recent weeks…
