West Ham submit €40m bid for Brazilian star whose agents want transfer wrapped up imminently

Seko Fofana, Lucas Paqueta, Lyon v Lens, February 2022.

West Ham United have made a bid for Lyon attacking midfielder Lucas Paqueta, according to multiple reports.

Paqueta has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs this summer. The Brazil international has been suggested as a target for the likes of Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, among others.

But West Ham have also been contenders and are now taking concrete steps towards his transfer. According to Dharmesh Sheth of Sky Sports News, they have made an offer worth €40million to Lyon. At current exchange rates, it would convert to around £33.7million.

Sheth has added that Paqueta’s agents are in London, in hope of pushing through a Premier League transfer.

The news has been backed up by trustworthy The Athletic reporter, David Ornstein, who has been able to verify the existence of a €40million offer and the fact that discussions are ongoing over personal terms.

Paqueta is under contract with Lyon until 2025, having joined from AC Milan in 2020. For the French club, he has contributed 21 goals and 14 assists from 80 appearances.

It seems his future could be in the Premier League, though, which would be a first for him. Before he arrived in Europe with Milan, he had only represented Flamengo in his native Brazil.

Paqueta played in both legs of Lyon’s Europa League quarter-final against West Ham last season. He started in the first leg in London and was a half-time incoming substitute in the reverse fixture.

Soon, he could end up calling the London Stadium his home if West Ham get their way.

West Ham to address attacking midfield need with Lucas Paqueta

After offloading Nikola Vlasic to Torino, West Ham have been in search of another attacking midfielder. In truth, there has been a void since the end of Jesse Lingard’s loan spell in the summer of 2021 – and they were never able to bring him back.

There have been a few rumours about other targets in the position since – and it seems they have settled on Paqueta as the one they should be pursuing.

It remains to be seen how he will adapt to his new surroundings. He took his time to cope with the switch from South American football to the European variety when trading the Brazilian Serie A for the Italian equivalent.

But the step from Serie A to Ligue 1 has been more comfortable for him. Hence, he could take another new challenge in his stride.

It will be important for him to do so in a World Cup year as well. Therefore, West Ham would be expecting to get a motivated player if their pursuit of Paqueta is successful.
