Lukasz Fabianski points to c-word after penning new West Ham contract

West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski has penned a 12-month contract extension to lay the gauntlet down to new signing Alphonse Areola.

The 37-year-old joined the Irons from Arsenal in the summer of 2018, and has gone on to become a key man for West Ham. There were doubts surrounding the future of Fabianski, but he could be around until 2024 now.

There is an option to extend the deal for a further year and Fabianski is excited about the future.

“I’m obviously pleased and very happy that I can stay for one more year, so I’m excited about it, for sure,” Fabianski said on the West Ham website.

“The way the club has developed and started to reach its potential, it’s been really nice to be part of it.

“I can see how much attention this club draws when it comes to interacting with the fans or the way it’s being presented in the media.

“I think there’s a lot of interest in the club, so it feels like this club is one of the bigger ones in the country, so I’m just honoured and proud to be part of this club for a few years now.”

Fabianski hails ‘consistency’

The Polish star hailed Moyes and his steadying influence in his second spell back at the club.

“If you want to develop as a team and as a club, I think consistency is the main thing, actually, because you always want to take your time to make the right, correct decisions. And I think that is always what helps you to perform well out there on the on the pitch,” the goalkeeper continued.

“And I think, with the way the club has been run in the past few years, I think that’s what helped us to be where we are at this present time.”

Moyes has already added Morocco defender Nayef Aguerd from Rennes and Areola has made a permanent switch from Paris St Germain after a successful loan spell.

Areola was a reliable back-up to Fabianksi last season, although he made only one Premier League appearance.

Moyes opted to use the 29-year-old as his keeper in the cups last season. And he made 10 appearances in the Europa League and another six in the FA and EFL Cups.

The former PSG keeper recorded eight clean sheets and he will have his eye on Fabianksi’s No.1 jersey this season.
